I just finished installing a Gambino frame notch kit in my 51 Chev. I've seen lots of threads about installing one of these but I haven't found a lot of info about what people have done to cover that large hole in floor. I was thinking about making part of the cover removable for easier access to the the air bags but I haven't worked out the best way to do it yet. What has everyone else done? Any advice and or pictures would be helpful. Thanks Jan 17, 2012 I posted some pics of my finnished trunk floor in post #9
on my old shoebox i made the top of the notch cover removable so i could access the bag bolts if i ever got a flat. The angled panels(there is one right behind the seat that you cant see)have a 3/4" break at the top, and a piece of thin wall angle was used on the sides to support the top cover. I also added weather stripping to seal out the elements and keep the panel from rattling at all. Getting a wheel and tire off of a car with a 3" ride height is impossible without dropping the rear. Ive also done removable access plates over each bag mounting point. you can see it here. the whole panel lifts up and slides out. cover number 2 was aluminum.
Thanks NRChopShop. That's the kind of thing I'm thinking about doing. I'm just trying to workout the best way to keep It all water proof.
Are the rest of you Rockstars driving around with big holes in your trunk? Or did no one see this because I didn't use the work Rockstar?
I have been struggling with the exact same problem because I have always believed things should be accessible in case of future breakdowns or needed modifications. Essentially I concluded the same thing mentioned above and that was to install an angled lip all around the wheel housing and trunk floor to serve as a mounting surface for a full width removable axle cover on a gasketed surface to seal out moisture and dust.
Any thin rubber weather stripping should work just fine. I found some at Home Depot meant for a screen door that worked really nicely. I had to make the cover removable. Getting a tire off of that car is impossible without unbolting the bags. Last thing i wanted to do was have a flat and be reaching up under the car unbolting them on the side of the highway.
I'm thinking I'm going to have to un-bolt my bags to get the tire off too. Is your cover hinged in the back or does the whole thing come out. What kind of latch did you use to attach it?
I found this thread the other day. 3 years later I have finnished the inside of my trunk. Here is what I ended up doing. I made a removable cover so I can access the the air bags and shocks I also added some brackets in the old spare tire well to hold a tool box
