Did a few searches and didn't come up with anything. Is it just me or am I a nut(don't answer that), but it seems for every three hours I spend working and fabricating things it takes me 6 hrs to clean up my mess. I am at the stage of my life where I can't find **** if the place is in a mess, and it just takes me longer to find anything than to get any work done so I have to clean up when I reach a certain point. Its about halfway through any project I am working on. By that time I have half my tools all over the shop in different states of being hidden from view, and am going wacky trying to find anything. Anybody feel the same or am I just nuts.......
When I was younger and I managed a Circuit City Roadshop we had a policy of "clean as you go" and I still do my best to live by that motto .
Yeah, a mess....that's my garage. When I look for something and can't find it....I buy it only to find the one I already had months later. I'm in the process of filing things....wish me luck!
I actually enjoy the clean up as much as the project......fire up a stogie POP on some tunes and have at it....
I usually have to clean before I start, and every couple hours during. My dad absolutly freaks out when the place is a mess while were working on something at his place. When you have a small place its even more important!
Mine never gets to the point that I can't find my tools or I'm tripping over **** but its been close. I have been making clean up after each major project and since I've been doing that it has been pretty clean and I like that, the cleaning for me ****s but it has to be done.
B4 I had my "shop" I lived as you do. Messes everywhere, missing tools, always searching. But when I retired I built myself a shop. 12' x 24'. Organized all my tools, my dad's tools, my granddad's tools. Found that I had multiple sets of everything. Now, things get messy when I work but I make a point of puting things in their place. It's great and I love it.
I felt really good about a month ago when I could actually SEE my work bench. Now, it's pile of tools, parts, nuts, bolts, drill bits, pieces of sandpaper too used to keep but too good to throw out. Sigh...
cleaning is good as long as it doesn't stop the "flow" of work. i clean in the morning when i come in, then thrash all day.
years ago building stock cars, there was 6 in of parts, bolts ,dust , grindings under the car and seemed to be impossible to clean it up called sort and shovel, got a bit more tidy after that and clean more as you go of course my jobs are smaller now , so that helps too
i try to keep my shop a little tidy, every friday i try and do something to make life a little easier, i call it shop improvement day, even if its just doing one thing, i need to make a holder for my nut drivers this friday, a board with 10 holes drilled in it.
When I moved into my new shop, I swore I was going to change my ways and keep it organized. Now I tend to clean up about once a week. I find I actually enjoy cleaning up and reorganizing things in the shop. I like checking out all my junk and walking around the cars picking up. I usually choose a time when I don't really have time to tear into a project - a half hour here, a half hour there. Any time in the shop is good time.
My shop does not have much room so a little mess goes a long way. Plus it is hard to clean since I have way too much stuff in it. It always needs cleaned up.
...Short life span is an understatement for me When your "Garage" is a 10x30...(Which includes the car storage) Its seeming never clean Iv'e spent hours moving stuff around, seems like everytime i start a new project/ item I have to completely rearange my junk. I'm still very happy however, im blessed to have what i do [/IMG]
I guess this is why I'm so **** about my shop....need to be able to find everything when I need it.........
I gotta keep things organized... it's a sickness I tell ya. My "shop" for three years wasn't much larger than a shed.
I like walking into a clean shop, makes starting easier. At night, I do the "rough buff". Roll up the hoses / cords and put away stuff I won't be using soon. Never leave tools on the floor, at least toss them on the bench. Looking for lost stuff causes anxiety.
Log onto the garage journal for some great ideas. My 'Manquarium' was a mess. Got it cleaned up, organised & utilized some great storage ideas.
As the baggy ****d apprentice years ago I always cleaned up the shop tools at the end of the day from the tradesmen. Not hard to stay organised. Had a friend who left all his tools on his shop floor and you were forever tripping over ****, always a workplace, health & safety issue and I only worked on my parts there. When you cleaned up he complained that he couldn't find anything. Get into the habit to clean as you go or leave it until the end of the day, you won't regret it. Everything has its place, and everything is in its place.
I haven't cleaned mine out in a long time... Got lot's of junk that needs to be tossed out anyway... Maybe I'll find all my tools...
