They call it 'Climate Change' now because 'they' couldn't back up that ******** any longer to the people...

I've got insulation panels in my high garage but since it's such a large volume the heat still leaves the area quite quickly. In addition to the entire gl*** wall I have on one side of the garage.
There's radiant heating in the floors at a fairly contstant 11-12° C (53 F) but this still uses up about a 300m3 of natural gas (10,000 ft3) every month during this cold winter. Hope this cold **** ends soon. Since I'm not always in the garage in the winter I've just turned down the heat a bit to keep the costs under control somewhat.

On the good side you don't have to shovel the snow off your roof.

They make "C" shaped channels that go between the joists to allow air circulation by the soffets with a ridge vent and you can insulate from the top side. This is what i did and put in R-51. Works like a charm and i also have a vaulted ceiling. Ceiling fans really help also if you don't have them.

And if the snow does keep laying on the roof, I just start up a well-cammed engine and make the building vibrate a bit so it slides off anyhow... :D

I have two suggestions for cieling/roof insulation: one is Rockwool, which comes in sheets about 2 X 4 feet, and is just awsome for wall and cielings. If you want to just shoot the trusses, there's a nex soy based spray on foam that is killer. That might be beyond what you want to do right now. Rockwool can be had at most commercial building supply outlets (not Lowes or Home Depot) It is awsome.

You won't go wrong with them. The cost is low, they are light weight and go up easily since you can press in a nail of a screw by hand into the foam and then while you are holding the sheet in place with one hand drive the prestarted fasteners home: you can do this as a one man operation.

You can tape the seams with any good quality clear packing tape,

When I remodeled my home this stuff went under the sheetrock on every exterior wall and ceilings in rooms under an attic. It makes quite a difference.

In your case, it will easily preserve your ridge venting.

Thanks again for all the help. I'm really not looking forward to the vaulted ceiling half of the garage. I used to be fearless when it came to heights, tall ladders. etc. Took a nasty fall a couple of years ago and got busted up pretty bad...put the fear of God in me. Now I'm afraid of a step stool. ****s getting old....I'll probably have to hire somebody to do that half of the garage.

there are a ton of ways to skin this cat..some already shown on here..
none of them will be easy, but well worth it in the long run.
I havent read every reply..im in a hurry to go out and work in my shop.
its been brutally cold up here and its 60 degrees out in my 1000SF shop.

here is one suggestion..(personally i dont like this one for my own reasons but its quick )
staple up visqueen (thick plastic) and at the bottom of every joist put a 1x2 nailed up to support the weight..than leave one corner of the celing open. go rent a cellulose sprayer and cellulose insulation and spray the cieling. only bummer is if the ceiling leaks or comes open all that cellulose **** is all over your garage.

I scrounged and got some rubber roof insulation..it is silver backed and 2" thick and ridgid..i insulated my walls with this..my celing I layed a grid work up, and layed in 6" commercial steel building insulation rolls..they are about 4 or 5 feet wide and any length imaginable..its toasty..they are also white backed with a thin vynl..acts as a moisture barrier too

this picture shows a little of it..It wasnt finished at this point but its working great..some loose ends to finish but in time i will..also works great in the summer keeping it cool
