    Quitcher*****in...You have plenty of room.

You need storage and cars don't melt in the rain.

What's the old saying ? "I was sad because I had no shoes until I saw a man who had no feet". Lots of car builders would die to have even a carport to get out from the sun and weather.

But I can tell you that a person could have a 10,000 ft garage and pretty quickly you would wish you had 20,000 ft.:) Just the way life is.

I don't have a garage. There are some killer industrial condos I'm thinking about moving into though. Nice little pad with a 2000 sq ft shop attached...

I love that! and I know I am blessed to have such an awesome shop and barn to work in.

  7. That's the story of my life. I guess you just have to keep building shops until you run out of land, and keep thinning the herd as you go.:)

The guys and gals from Publishers Clearing House went to the wrong place! Looks like the big mansion and huge workshop will have to wait. :(:(

  10. I have no shop. I work in the gr*** and dirt, hell I'd be thankful for a big tent at the moment. Especially when winter hits, it'll stop me dead.

  11. Yep ran out of room with the 1/2 acre and 28x40 shop, so got another place with a few acres and a 26x60 shop and a 32x40 shop. Well not all the way moved in yet and guess what? the shops are all filled up and i have 10 cars and a bunch of parts outside also! And that is after taking down about 6+ tons of s****! I swear this **** multiplies like rats while i am asleep!!

  12. If you get a bigger garage you will just get more junk!

EXACTLY!! I have a one car garage, with a nice concrete drivewall. Roll it out to work on it. But I also do a bunch of side work on the drive-way too.

Thankfully I was able to do most of my build at my folks place, that was nice.

Big spaces fill up fast, I don't have a lot of spare anything and I like it that way, keeps me focused.

  14. I have an oversized one car garage here, it was billed as a 2 car garage when the house was for sale but I can see. I do all myy work on the driveway and the garage is just a place to store tools and a car.

We put the C-10 ( the pusher) together in a 10 wide, and to get from one side of the truck with the door closed you crawled under.

Before that I never owned a garage, if I built an engine at home it normally got done in the kitchen or living room and had for years.

    its just life.

  15. PnB,

I konw exactly what you mean about the "oversized" one stall...

When we bought the house, I walked the empty garage a few times thinking, "Yeah, my stuff'll fit" and NEVER broke out the measuring tape. Then, after the 14 hour move, I tried to fit the Nova AND Mrs. Yankee's daily in- they were literally "door-to-door", woth just enough room to squeaze through to the door :D

Isn't that the truth! We built a shop just for workin on hot rods. No lawn mowers etc, just car stuff. It's 36' X 30' and when we first built it, when it was empty, it looked huge! Tool boxes, work benches, machines, 2 builds goin on at once, it got small pretty quick. It still beats workin in the driveway for sure but it is close quarters for sure sometimes.

  17. My new/old place up north has a 30x40, 16' to the bottom of the truss. But it has gravel floors and is not insulated. I doubt that it will ever actually get concrete floors. I am going to pour a lever pad big enough to build a car on and a slab in the back for my work area, but I am afraid that is as far as it will go. Still be quite a shop for an old goof ball like me.

x2 I have just enough room to open one door and about a foot between the bumper and the garage door. I guess it works out though because if I had another stall I would probably have another car too.

For my last project i left my little 30' x30' garage and commandeered a 25' x 70' stall and I hardly had room to drive my fork lift around! (I feel the pity that a all of you have for me.) (;-)

I still remember though, many, many years ago installing a 49 Caddy automatic transmission in the dirt while the owner held it up on his chest. The jack stands were old logs.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought the garage would be big enough until we moved in haha. When we looked at our house there was a Bridgeport, one of them 3in 1 cheapy mill deals, and a welding table and two in progress motorcycles in the garage. I looked at this "two" car garage and thought"hell the two doors **** but the space is big enough and alreay heated." sure enough day one in the house we realized you can't park two cars inside without eating up all the space. I have a 14x10 shed next to the garage with many tools and parts that aren't everyday items, a 16x12 in the back yard that has concrete, electricity, and a loft, and a greenhouse for all the lawn stuff. So now there may not be a ton of garage space but at least all my stuff is inside something...

I have 3 garages and need a 4th. The 24X24 houses the domestic **** and the 41 Packard. The 14X18 is the garden shed, doing double duty holding things I don't need in the main shop. The main shop is 30X40 and I barely manage. There's 3 cars, parts of a 4th, 2 full woodgrain jobs (one with 15pcs!), and 2 lifetimes of spares, tools equipment and literature. The 4th would be a nice warehouse for things that I can't throw away or get to right away. I had it fairly well organized at the start of the year. Yeah, that went south pretty fast...

I work in half of a 30x30 garage. I didn't have much inside storage. Then my wife got rid of a couple of horses so now I get part of the loft to store stuff. I am also ready for another shop. Anytime now.

You can make a quick, easy and cheap "car port tent" for when it rains.

I have 8 nails over my garage (filled with tools and junk). They fit into the eyelets of a blue tarp. The other end of the tarp is held up with two PVC pipe "tent poles." They are held in place with rope and tent stakes.

It will handle quite a bit of wind but I have to take it down if it becomes really strong.

It's very fast to put up and take down.

I've often thought about getting a motorized awning off of an old RV.

If you think you want a bigger shop or garage now, go check out garage journal. I'm happy with my little 20X30 dirt floor red block garage my gma and gpa built in the 60's just need a shed for all the **** I have stored in there. Now when I win the lottery........... well, that's a story for another time and place.

Just cleaned out my pops' garage enough to get my car and tools inside, even painted the walls and put up shelves. Take my car out for the weekend and wouldn't you know it by the time I get back he's got the lawn mower in there, the power washer...

  27. I finally bought a house with a 20 x 30 garage... moving this weekend... I was pretty excited until I read this thread... now I'm depressed.

Up till about 20 years ago I did everything outside. My first full-on project was under a carport on gravel. Many more were done on driveways or in backyards.

About 10 years ago I was finally able to build a decent 1200 sf shop to work in and, sure enough, it's full of cars, parts, tools, and equipment.

On A good day I can manage 1 1/2 stalls to work in... And I'm thankful for that.:)

Problem now is that I'm too stove up to work on anything...

Amen! Actually, I got a wife and a kid, so it's mainly their junk.
