Welcome to the HAMB koolkev. There are a couple of cool Kev's here already - KiwiKev and Cyclone Kev spring to mind. But while you ***** about gas prices - that's petrol to you - I think you Brits need to get things in perspective. You live in a country where you can never get more than 65 miles away from the coast. You drive relatively short distances compared with the U.S.A, Canada and Australia. You can usually walk to the shops and everything is much closer together. In most of the U.S.A., Canada and Australia - except for certain inner cities - you are hard pressed to walk anywhere, as the infrastructure is simply not laid out that way. Public transport is usually sp****, except maybe in inner cities, and as often as not, there is simply none. The U.S. is car centric. So to get anywhere usually involves driving four times the distance that you do in the U.K. The Imperial gallon is approx. 4.5 litres. The U.S. gallon is 3.875 litres, since you metric traitors now measure in litres. So which particular size gallon are you referring to when you quote nearly $12 a gallon? US vehicles and many Aussie vehicles have traditionally had larger displacement engines with significantly higher fuel consumption per mile - that's kilometer to you. You drive much more fuel efficient econo boxes. I bet half the British population was conceived in the back seat of a Mini! My annual mileage just getting to and from work (30 miles each way) and around town is 25,000 - without going anywhere other than locally - here that's within 80 miles of home - your equivalent would likely be 30 miles/50 kms. So our cost based on gas (petrol to you) consumption/distance traveled per annum - is at least double your cost. How do I know? I grew up in the U.K. and still have family there, lived in Europe for many years and likewise, I have been in the U.S. for quite a few years. There are quite a few ex pat Brits on the HAMB who would probably agree with me on the distance/mileage issues. While nobody likes these rapacious oil prices, you may consider that it is not as bad as it could be and it is unlikely to get any better.
