I got a locking cap from Obsolete Ford only $10.95 part # P09-15060-130 give them a call at 1-800-654-3247 I tried a lot of local parts houses with no luck, this one fits!!
Thanks for the info Jeff. I will wait to see what "Doll Kustom" has to offer as well. I tried all sorts of caps and none worked correctly. The tangs were not set deep enough to engage the filler tube. I tried modifying one which I am now using but it is a kluge to say the least. Bill, Spring, TX
Sounds like you have the same problem I had with my '56. The non-vented cap (closest in the pic below) has deeper tabs, it's what I ended up with.
Bill....this has nothing to do with gas caps but.... I'm digging the 54 dash in your 53....great idea. Gotta love that engine turned panel from the 54's. BTW....I'm in Conroe.
Thanks Ron, How are you venting your gas tank with that non vented cap? Do you happen to know the brand and part number or the car/truck it was intended for? Thanks, Bill, Spring, TX
Rustyfords: Thanks for the comment on the dash. I really like the stainless trim on the 53 better than the 54 and like the 54 dash a lot more than the 53. See you around.. Bill, Spring, TX
re: How are you venting your gas tank with that non vented cap? Do you happen to know the brand and part number or the car/truck it was intended for? Thanks, Bill, Spring, TX The tank is vented, it has a tube on top that vents to the side. I went thru several caps too, before I found the correct one. Don't know why the bigger online restoration places don't list them, as they appear to be fairly common. I'll check tomorrow & see if I can find the part # and source for the cap, I got it a year or so ago - memory doesn't go back that far without help. I'll post here if I find it.
Like I said in my post the cap with the deeper tangs is what you will need and that locking cap is the correct one for our Fords.
Yes Jeff that is correct - deeper lock tabs than the vented cap. I wanted a stock,non-locking cap. Quite a bit more than yours though - $21.00 plus s&h. I got it from Concours Parts & Accessories, phone # 800-722-0009, link: www.concoursparts.com . Part # is AB-9030-C Ron
teehee. i had a blonde moment. (hate to admit it... but i got my threads crossed) after all the reading about radiator caps, that's what i checked for part number.... not the gas cap. i think you have it covered, but i'll check again tonight and post the GAS cap part info that i have!. . . haha!
I ordered one from dennis carpenter and it did not fir at all! dont order theirs. I need to find a good new one too.
