Gas prices ....and I thought Road Warrior was sill

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jester, May 14, 2004.

  1. As was stated, regular in Chicago is around $2.20, premium about 20-30 cents higher.
But diesel is still $1.79 where I live (outskirts of Chi town).
Kinda thinking about a VW diesel, 'cause the Merc still only gets 25 mpg diesel...and I am cheap.

Glad I just got a 71 Vega 3 weeks ago [IMG]never had a car that gets that good of milage! Cause all my other cars have Big Blocks I guess...

I figured that they'd all be gone by now.

I also remember bits of a conversation when I was a kid about the Vega becoming the "duece of 2001". I guess that didn't happen, eh?

ALthough there's probably more steel '32s than Vegas at this point.

  10. What really pissed me off is that I have a old motorhome (big block ford). Had to run to town to get propane. Cost over $10 in gas to buy $8 of it. Not goin to the Monroe swap 'cause I'm not lookin for anything and it isn't worth $40 in gas to go socialize. Think I'll go mow the lawn. That'll only be $2 in gas. Think gas is controlling my life. $2.18 here for reg and rising 'bout twice a week.

****, I think I'm gonna take my bike to the flea market tomorrow to use as a display sample, or "floor model"! Wherever I park it, people gather to check it out and tell me that it just can't work (as if I CARRIED it there or something!).

I'm sure with gas prices on the upswing, I could get a few orders to build Hack-Bikes for others...I use mine for all my local running around...no h***les from the cops, and depending on how you ride it or tune the carb, it'll deliver 70-90mpg! It's great fun rolling into a gas station, dropping some loose change on the counter, and filling the tank!

Some gas stations get pissed when they ring up a sale for thirty cents, but most just laugh. Wonder how long they'd laugh if they got, say...TWENTY people per day rolling in on these things instead of one oddity?!

If I'm going anywhere within five miles or so and it's nice out, I take the bike! Cheap to build and ride...so I save money for the car projects while getting where I need to go! I leave the "gas hog" Metro at home (it only gets like 30mpg!)!!

I`ve just been reading in todays paper that the reason oil has gone up is because the Chinese are buying anything they can get and it`s also due to high demand from the U,S.due to the holiday season coming round and people driving SUV`s that don`t return good gas mileage. It quoted that 45% of the worlds petrol consumption is in the U.S....add to this that them annoying little f****ers in Iraq are disrupting supplies, it goes on to state that the days of "CHEAP" oil may be gone for ever.

I put £60($105) through the roadster last weekend and paid 90p(157cents) a litre for Optimax....sure it hurts...but if I want to play, I gotta pay.At least if the price of crude drops back down your prices will drop back, but here they`ll stay up.

Little perspective on ethanol. Ethanol isn't an energy source in the way that gasoline is. Ethanol is manufactured rather than refined and if you add up all the energy that goes into growing crops and distilling the product then it's barely a net energy gain overall. It would be simple to make new vehicles run on almost pure ethanol but but even if it cost the same per gal. as gasoline or even a little less it would still be a lot more expensive 'cuz the btu per gallon is a lot lower so you use a lot more--the higher octane rating notwithstanding. Plus ethanol may be cheaper per gal. than gas right now, mainly because of all the tax breaks, but if a significant fraction of the fleet converted to it the infrastructure for growing grain and making fuel would have to go up several orders of magnitude and that would be reflected in the price real quick. The infrastructure devoted to fossil fuels is freakin' huge, trillions of dollars, and economic systems that size have a hell of a lot of "inertia". Any alternative fuel you can name is going to suffer the same problems of scale and cost. This also applies to the whole looney business concerning hydrogen as a fuel. Just like ethanol it is a carrier of energy not a source because of the energy required to make it only the imbalance is even worse than ethanol and other bio-fuels. My suggestion is keep your gas hungry rod and trade the Expedition or F250 in on a Civic or a Focus. Big honkin' thirsty noisy bent eight for fun and a rice-burner for a driver. Doesn't sound the depths of deprivation to me.

$1.89 here i've been riding my motorcycle instead of driving the truck.I took the wife out to eat last night we stopped to put gas in the car when i asked how much she said "well it isn't going to get any cheaper" yeah i shelled out the coin to top off the tank. You'd think with a Texas oil man in office and our armed forces where most of the oil is our prices might go down..............

Today I filled up my 56 Chevy at the cheapest gas station around here. My favourite 98 octane premium was Euro 2.25(US$2.70) a liter, that makes 8.55 Euros(US$ 10.26) a gallon!!!!The newspapers say that there was no end in sight.

My solution: I´ll drive less. Next Thursday I´ll be going to a car show in Bottrop which means 500miles one way.
I decided to go by train with the 56 loaded on one of the railroad cars.
I´ll drive to the railroad station, load her on the car, go to bed and on the next morning I´ll be there for about a hundred dollars one way. I just can´t drive for $100 bucks...

Just found out that in 1980 gas was averaging about $2.78 a gallon in 2004 dollars. 'Course that was before the land was covered up in SUVs and trucks getting 12-16 mpg. Even though technically the overall fleet mileage is up since then it's cold comfort having to fill a 30 gal. tank 2 or 3 times a week. If prices stay high expect a move to higher mileage vehicles which will mean less demand and lower prices. That's the way it's always worked and always will. You'll notice that even in Europe where gas is stupefyingly expensive, mainly because of taxes, there hasn't been anything like a wholesale move towards "alternative" fuel sources. I'm thinking this price spike will abate in a few months. The Saudis may be ****heads but they're smart ****heads. It's not in their financial interests to ignite a mad scramble for higher mileage vehicles not to mention weakening western economies. Maybe having 150,000 veteran U.S. combat troops right next door will concentrate their minds.

95 octane unleaded is $5.00 a gallon around here. Leaded fuel is no longer sold, you have to use additive from a bottle (=expensive).

you know, as much as I hate Bush, even I have to admit he's got less to do with it than straight-up supply/demand issues.

you across-the-pond guys must be snickering if not downright laffin' it up at us right about now.... we've been cheap-gas pussies for a long time, our comeuppance was coming, but.....why's it have to be right now it gets costly? dang.

Laughing at ya? Not at all. The costs of living depends on various thing. Since Germany is approximatly as big as California, you don´t have to cover far distances to go to work, school or shopping. Most of the places you want or have to go to are within 5 miles away from home. So I think going to work here might cost about as much as in the US.
    Maybe I´m wrong though.

Darwin makes a good point. I was makin about 9 or 10 bucks an hour in 1980 and I remember payin about $1.20 or so for gas.I had a new 1980 Chevy 4WD PU and it was lucky to get 11 MPG around town. My wages have tripled since then,(same work),my 2003 Chevy PU gets 16 or 17 MPG around town so I'm still money ahead. If gas had gone up 3 to 5 cents a gallon yearly for the last 20 years nobody would be *****in. It's those weekly 10 cent jumps that ****.

Somethin to think about. I saw a report the other day that gave the average daily consumption of crude oil worldwide at around 77 million barrels. If China's standard of living approaches that of Mexico,(yes Mexico), consumption would increase to 142 million a day. Where's that going to come from?

i work at a service station near detroit. and we get all kinds of people complaining about the prices right now were 2.04 and were the cheepest place for close to 30 miles. no the other day we had this old guy come in and was telling a story. hes a school teacher. he started teaching in 1956. he said then the teachers staring salery was 4g a year. now in 2004 a starting salery for a teacher is 36,000 a year. no he said back then a gallon was "two bits" or a 25cents. so the wages are about the same. if u even out to what cost of livins is right now. we figured that back in 56 u could pay for two new cars with your 4g. and now with 36g u can do about the same. both would be very low model cars but u could do it. so how he figured is gas is actually cheeper now then it was in 56 due to wages and what not. thought it was a cool way to look at it so i wanted to share.

Now in a relativity perspective yes gas isnt more than it was "in the old days"...My gripe is that it doesnt need to be...it doesnt cost the refineries more..they just make more money.I get offended when they play us all for fools...Am i wrong for that???May as well be a monopoly if they are all gonna be in bed together!!
