The sad part of all of this is that cars get so much better fuel mileage now compared to 1978 when the Arab oil embargo first hit. In 1978 the average car got maybe 15-18 mpg. Gas had reached an all-time high of 79¢ per gallon, if you could find it and had the patience to sit in a line for an hour to get some. With hybrid cars and the turbo diesels getting upwards of 60 mpg fuel is still about 5 times higher in selling price compared to vehicle mileage. THE BOTTOM LINE SEEMS TO BE THAT THE GAS COMPANIES WILL ALWAYS SELL THEIR PRODUCT BUY A PROFIT RATIO OF 5 TIMES CURRENT VEHICLE M.P.G..

The only way you will be able to beat these pirates is to organize a national boycott of individual oil companies. Say... BP for 10 days... then Exxon for 10 days... etc. This type of boycott would hit them where it hurts and force them to lower prices. As they lower prices others would be compelled to lower theirs to remain competitive. AT LEAST THATS THE PLAN.

I seriously doubt that that consumers have the fortitude for this kind of stuff. Tonight on NBC/TV news I heard that U.S. drivers have increased their consumption of gasoline somewhere between 10% to 20% from this time last year. $4.00 per gallon is one hurricane away.

  5. Hey 1320, maybe ya' oughta contact ole' Red Green, up at the Possum Lodge. He's surely got some kind of invention that runs on duct tape and WD-40. :D

As far as this thread, looks like someone beat me to the punch. Thought I was the only one who had to leave my 400 cubic inch, gas guzzling land yacht in the garage, 'cept for special occasions. Aint no way I can afford to drive it to work everyday.
BTW...GM had the whole electric car thing in the bag
    (movie:Who killed the electric car)
and with the help of our government and big oil companies they all got repo'd and crushed! Perfectly good working automobiles that would easily move people to and from work on a single charge. Mobil oil bought the rights to the battery patents.

P.S. currently looking at a house so close, that I can ride my bike to work.

Then don't bitch about the price of gas !

    I don't hate SUV's with 5 people in them.

Look I'm a pro business / freedom loving USA country guy but at what point does it get stupid for the masses to drive totally illogical vehicles to the point where it makes the USA vunerable to any hickup from a storm / strike / fart and makes stability of life a thing of the past.

    Governement is NOT the answer.

What do you want to bet that the big 3 auto makers make a call to the oil companies and say - hey 12 billion profit last quarter and we are sitting on stuff that is going to put us under....well we are shifting gears and putting all of our resources into hydrogen / propane / electric from today forward full speed ahead and guess what - poof - the price of gas will drop gauranteed !

Freedom is great but you can't fix stupid when the pump is dry.

I don't think people realise what situation we are living in and what can happen when the supply runs short and people get stupid if you know what I mean.

Frankly - I am a pro business guy but with only 5-6 major oil companies world wide - NOT ENOUGH COMPETITION.

And I own a percentage in a Ethenol Company !

$3.59 for 87 here in So. Oregon.
I ride my bike (bicycle) past the gas station to work about 200 or so days a year. Been doing it regularly for 20 years or so I figure. In every town I've lived.
I see the same people driving big ass trucks, SUVs and cars on my commute every day. One person per vehicle. I hear the same people bicthing about it too. People need to think past the the pocket.
It's costing us all a lot more then a few bucks a gallon, liter or however you buy it.
I spend about 40 bucks a month on gas. I pay almost twice that for car insurance. That ticks me a bit.
I pulled the V8 and put the 4 banger in last month.:D

dont believe this crap that the greenies are keeping more refineres from being built. if oil production has peaked as some say now if not very soon why would you spends tons of money on more production. think about it if you can get 4.00 a gallon for all you can sell why would you spend a lot of money just so you can sell it for 2.00 a gallon. the oil companys charge 4.00 a gallon because they can.

i remember when katrina hit...gas prices skyrocketed, and caused a panic. i think that was done intentionally myself. they got us used to gas being $3 something a gallon...so they could drop it down to $2.85, and we'd feel that it was a good deal. pay $3 somethign a gallon for a long time, listen the the news saying how there may be a gas shortage, and then they drop it to $2.85 to make it seem like we are getting a deal on it.
it's all a big rip off...oil companies are making billions of $$, and no one can convince me that they can't drop the prices because it costs them too much to refine it. come on, they can drop it to $1.00 a gallon and they'd still come out ahead...way ahead. they are just doing this because they can...and there is nothing we can do to win. a gas boycott will not do it...that would probabably make them raise prices. if everyone went without buying gas for a day, the demand will be twice as much as it was the day before (and they know that) so...they can jack it up, and still get us because they know that we need it.

  23. so you reckon we get health care for free? we wish!...we pay for it via taxes out of our monthly wage...we pay income tax and also a thing which is called national insurance which is basically another tax...the waiting list to get anything done via our `free` healthcare is anything up to 2 years....add to that the $10.00 (£5 ) per 2 hour parking fee at hospitals:eek: add to that the $10 per gallon to get to the hospital to get our `free` healthcare....more and more people in the UK are going private for their healthcare which isn`t cheap but they pay it to get around the waiting lists...and they still pay the taxes, national insurance etc...you dont get a choice to opt out....so in answer to your question do we pay healthcare insurance...Yes!! and some....oh we also have to pay 17.5% tax on everything we buy apart from kids cloths, we pay $13 for every prescribed medicine we need....i could go on and on....but i`d probably have to pay another tax....retaliatry rant over

Portland runs from the low $3.50s to the upper $3.80s. My daily is a 93 Wrangler with a straight 6. It gets the same gas mileage as my Fairlane that has a 292, and easily weighs twice as much. If I had secured parking, I'd drive the Fairlane. I can ride my motorcycle, if I don't have to carry anything big to with me...which is rarely. I also pay $77.50 a month to the City of Portland to park, and I work for them.

I live about 12 miles outside Portland. I have to drive to work, it's 14 miles from my driveway to work. I work a swing shift, and get home around 0300....when I get off on time. Public transportation doesn't work around my hours, and if I took it to work it'd easily add another hour onto my commute. Along with public transportation is the exposure to everyones colds and flus when you're crammed into the cattle car. A week off work being sick doesn't appeal to me at all, nor does getting my kids sick. Bicycling is not an option, I have to drop off kid at daycare 2 days a week before I go to work. Even if it was, the reality is that I don't have that much extra time in my day. I usually work about a 12 hour day, with commute...if I get off on time, adding another 2-3 hours of commute time would be out of the question. I don't think my situation is all that unusual.

If you want to talk conspiracy theories, how about control of the individual by curtailing free travel, while pushing the dependency of government run public transportation coupled with the continued raising of taxes to pay for such 'neccesary services upon which so many depend', along with political groups holding this up as a failure of Capitalism to care for the masses while trying to usher in Socialism and electric cars?

Or they could just be greedy bastards.
