I think the HAMB refinery is a good idea but only if we do it up Mad Max style and all get mohawks and spiky football shoulder pads etc.

This all worries me because as oil relates to cars:

    1. It's our hobby.
    2. It's my livelihood and I know the same goes for a lot of you.
    3. It's the only thing keeping our fragile society from crumbling.

I've got some relatively fuel efficient cars, but I'm worried about the big picture, not just my own wallet.

And what is the deal with minimum wage anyway? Why doesn't it go up every year?

I'll recommend a movie I think is good. The Corporation. Scary stuff.

I did that for twenty years, got sick of walking the peek of a two story colonial every three weeks to clean the chimney when there was two feet of snow and ice on the roof (that's a whole nother story). Now I'm too old and weak to keep cutting and splitting the 30 or so face cord I used each year. Damn, I am still hoping for the coal solution I live only two hours from good old Pa. and they still have a lot of coal, maybe one trip a year to pick up the six or so ton I need to heat that old barn I live in. Anyway thanks for the bitch time, but we will need a solution to this gas and oil problem before long, I guess it's time to move to warmer weather and buy a moped.

Not to drive you guys even crazier, but I bet you a six pack of beer that it hits $5.00 a gallon by next summer. That is just what I have heard from guys that I know that are in the biz.

I guess that Evian water is now cheaper than gas. I used to laugh when I would see someone pay more for water than gas.

The price of gas makes beer a bargin, I think I'll have one.

  6. 40 cent jump today at the local Thorton's ($3.09; from $2.69 yesterday). And that's in Kane county, where we don't pay the Cook county taxes.

I can hardly wait to see what the prices are in Chicago tomorrow, when I go back to work; usually there is a 30-40 cent difference, owing to Cook Co. and city taxing.

You all see a little blue 2CV out there, it'll be me, better 35 mpg than the 24 the Merc gets...

Why and how does a an old 2CV get better gas mileage than most new small cars? Emissions have cleaned up a lot since the 70s. Why hasn't fuel economy increased as substantially? I understand safety standards have made cars heavier. But lightweight materials have been advanced significantly. Technology across the board is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was 20 or 30 years ago. But the engine in your new car isn't much more efficient than the one in your old hot rod. Are their just inherent limitations in combustion engines that keep fuel economy low?

If they did that through all those years, how could they fuck us, now...?

The comparisons to prices in Europe are way off. . . you see their prices are high because they include a lot of taxes. . . and what do they get for those taxes? stuff like good roads, healthcare, education, etc. . . you know, sissy stuff that working americans seem to want to reserve for the upper class.

It went down $.04 a gallon here Monday, then up $.40 today WTF?

  11. The government announced a potential cap on prices, earlier this week, so they're gonna rape us in the meantime... that's what I think is going on.

$2.39 for regular down the street here in Indy, and that was one of the places where it is normally cheaper than others.

  15. No. It's public demand for speed and safety, coupled with construction methods that haven't changed in the last 75 years. Safety equipment costs money and weight. Those door intrusion beams, for instance, they're not light. Each new generation of cars are getting heavier and less efficient. The lastest Car and Driver contains an editorial by Csaba Csere which examines why motorcycles have gotten scads lighter and more efficient, when cars are just porky.
    Consider: Porsche 911: 1980 = 2700#; 2005 = 3253#, horsepower went from 172 to 321.
    Now consider the fastest motorcycles, one from 1980 (Honda CBX), and the current R1 (Yam). CBX = 1047cc, 86 hp @ 9,000 rpm, 596 #. The R1?? 998cc, 152 hp @ 12,750, 447#. Quarter mile?? 11.4 @ 118 vs 10.2 @ 141.
Now, IF the american consumer had demanded (via purchases) cars that were more efficient, we'd be driving a VW Lupo diesel that return over 80 mpg. Instead, we have SUV's with V6s at 17 mpg. Both vehicles can be purchased TODAY, just not in the same market.
As to HOW my 2CV6 (yes, the BIG engined one, 602cc) gets 35 mpg everyday (combined city-highway), it's up to weight (1300#) and size (602cc). Nothing else really, as the car is as aerodynamic as a barn (cd over 50), and has to be driven everywhere with my foot on the floor, neither of which contribute much to economy. Now, if there were 60 years of developement (the 2CV came out in 1948, changed not much since), imagine where we'd be in efficiency.
BTW, for those who don't know, the 2CV engine is an over-square hemi-head air-cooled opposed twin (think BMW slash 2) driving the front wheels through a four speed (4th is OD) gearbox. But the car is about the size of a new Mini (taller and skinnier, but the same overall length), holds four comfortably (it really does), and can work like a truck, owing to a roof that rolls back, seats that remove easily, and doors/trunk lid that slide off in seconds.

Oh, that 35 mpg figure could be improved if I went slower (the speed limit, perhaps :D ).

Just filled up here, $2.90 for 87 octane, $3.09 for 93 octane.

I'm seriously considering a differnt engine for my HotRod project, as it is going to continue to go up to $5.00 sooner than later

usually SC is one of the cheapest in the country..

The cheapest I can find is the following

    Monday = $2.43
    Tuesday = $2.55
Wed (at 3:45pm) = $2.69 (drove by to on way to get the hotrod to fill up for this weekend) when I got there 15 minutes later I found
Wed (at 4pm) = $2.89 (all others raised theirs to $2.99 or $3.01)

    thats $0.45 in two days.

I asked the lady if I was seeing things and she said no, she just did it and it was because the stations down the street raised there and they have to stay within a range of other stations in the general area. Isn't that against the law.... price gouging and raising prices because others do..... time for an Investigation into crooked practices... may bring the cost back down..

    How bad in California today?????

Guy at work said he was reading something saying it was going to $4.00 a gallon before it stops. Next quarter Oil companies will be making record profits...

$2.69 here in Tulsa. That's a lot of money for horse and buggy. We still ride our horses to work on dirt paths and live in Tee Pee's.
