I have been enjoying my hot rod for about a month now. The Thumpur cam is all settled in. I have made all the adjustments I need to make. I even ran the car in traffic last week, bumper to bumper for a bout 2 hours. I go to a Shell station and the attendant asked " What grade of gas you want" I say high test, V power. I run my car for a bout a hour and when I get home it's got This "Run on" It's diesling. I know this can't be something I did. That gas is not high grade. What should I do. Should I run it all out and get some other brand? What recorse do I have? Should I retard my timing? Thoughts
You guys have attendants? Here in California we pump our own gas... Can you pump your own or do you have gas nazi's like they do in Oregon?
why did you go for the highest octane? what is your compression ratio? you may not need to spend the extra money and the engine may not like it. my 331 storker runs the same on 87 or 110. no noticable difference except the 110 smells good out the tailpipes. my compression is just under 10:1.
thats what i was thinking! and whats this winter blend you talk about? over here gas is gas! no blends or maybe they are not like the ones back east, i could be wrong you know?
I'd back the timing down or the idle or both until it's about empty. Ive been putting the cheapest, horse piss gas I can find in my '04 GMC,with no trouble,,,yet. The thing is like new,w/ only 37K on it. When I fill it,Ive been adding some MarvelMysteryOil to it.Since this new 'gas' has a lot of alky in it,I figure the oil will help lube the pump a little, which is a ***** to replace as its IN the tank.I know they've been doing this for quite some time now,but what really pisses me off is that the Fuel FILTER is in the tank too. Just brilliant ya know? Good luck with your deal,,curious if you got a tank load of ****ty gas or something.
Gees, I'd just shut it off in gear if it runs ok otherwise why start changing stuff? Just use the gas up and see what the next batch does..
Yeah, we got winter and summer gas. Winter has a lower vaporization temp to help with cold starts. But when the air temp goes up it doesn't behave well. And can cause the gas to percolate out of the carb when you hot soak, too. then it's flooded when you try and restart. But the dieseling can be helped by lowering the idle speed. Retarded timing or ported vacuum to the dist will make dieseling worse. Cause the combustion chamber is hotter. Back in the early 70's when the smog **** was really screwing up the cars the GM's had a solenoid to close the throttle plates further when the ignition was shut off to try and control the run-on. This has been a problem for a long time. (former petroleum ***ets delivery technician) Frank
I have been playing with the idle. I will turn it down tomorrow to see if there is any change. I let the car run a long time in park. The temp was up so that maybe the problem. All kinds of stuff was running though my head. Valves were to tight. If the valves were to tight it would missfire right? I have good va***(20) there is no backfire out the pipes.
There are still a few full service gas station's in the dallas area. I am 26 and still remember full service station's everywhere growing up. As far as I remember, if you are running a motor that was originally built before a certain year, that you run 87 regardless of internals-unless it's drag racer. I put lucas in my tank everytime i fill up because this ethanol, unleaded **** will eat up your seals in no time.
Do you have points or an electronic ignition? If you have points, after driving about a month, the rubbing block may have worn down which closes the point gap (dwell) and changes the timing just enough to do what you described.
Ethanol? I've read that it runs hotter temps in the combustion chamber. I've had dieseling problems (not all the time) ever since my state mandated the E10 stuff.
The fire dept. in my town will not allow self serve. And the price is the same as other town. Lot's of out of towner's come here to get gas.
What the Hell is a " gas attendant ", go back and ask him to fill it with Ethel, when Ethel runs out get Mabel. R.I.P. Groucho.
Winter blend gas,how the hell do they keep the gas from mixing with the summer blend when new gas is delivered? Never heard of winter and summer blend gas.
There is winter and summer blends to go with the EPA mandates. There are actually over 100 different blends across the country, for the same reasons. You can't take gas meant for the Dallas market and send it to Denver - different blend. Yet another reason gas prices are higher than they should be.
Dilution is the solution. even little gas stations do 4000 gal a day now, so in a week, you run three tanker loads thru. You can thank the EPA for the blends. There are also over 100 regional blends for different polution requirements. Frank
We love our gas nazi's! Who wants to smell like gas after a fill up? Actually if I'm driving one of my hotrods they just hand me the nozzle, cause they don't want to screw up and spill gas on them.
Hey, I resemble that remark The retailers group here tells us that the increase in insurance premiums for states that have self service is more than the costs ***ociated with hiring us pumpers. This is why, the pump prices don't really go up when you have a full service only station. And all the stations here let the hot rodders and bikers pump there own. People from Ohio and Indiana have a weird at***ude towards us. People from Fla, take pictures to show back home. LOL Frank
