I just bought a 66 c15 it smelled of gas in the cab when I first got it, hence today I pulled the gas tank and found 2 small pin holes. I patched them and it stopped the smell in the cab. Proud and clear headed i started to drive home from the shop only to notice the smell again. It is not coming from the gas tank, because when I stopped the truck the scent went away. Could it be the fuel pump? The reason I ask is that it has started having issues starting, like it is not getting gas and then it fires and is fine. Let me know what you guys think.
If it is the fuel pump it will be wet with gas. I would lean to carb probs. Pull air cleaner and look over carb inside and out with it running.
I had that problem and just ignored it. Then the fire started. That ain't good in a boat....LOL. Damn neared burned her up.
Do you smoke?? You may not have this problem much longer..... Years ago, I had a mid 60's truck with the tank in the cab. It got so bad that I mounted the tank under the bed with new lines etc.. It wasn't that big of a job. I didn't like the idea of sitting in front of a gas tank anyway... Good luck!
I just put a new tank under the bed in my 66....really easy, but you will need to do some mild fab work. The kit was cheap from LMC
I agree with Garagerods put the tank somewhere out back, my plans for my F1 P.S. I don't smoke either.
I'd pull the tank. get it boiled and sealed (if you can find a radiator shop that does them), put in all new seals, make sure the vent hose is new, have the correct cap then you should be ok. Bob
How is your rear hood rubber seal? I seem to recall that I had that similar problem in my C-10. When I restored the truck, I replaced that piece of rubber & it seemed to correct the situation. That seal helps prevent under hood smells from being sucked in through the vent (at the base of the windshield) & into the cab. It won't hurt to replace that rubber even if it doesn't correct your situation. It's not expensive.
