I'm trying to stay pre-1950 on my 31 Model A Coupe. I want to mount the gas tank in the front of the trunk (vertical below the back window/back of the seats), and plumb it so the spout is outside, sorta on the top/side of the drivers rear fender -you know. Can anyone recommend anything pre-50? Or should I just go with a new cell -and from whom? Would it have to be custom made? I'm envisioning something like 6"w x 18"h x 30"w (ballpark estimate) THANKS!
first i was thinking of a model t tank but, it may be a bit wide. my second thought is a pickup truck tank (from behind the seat), like an f1 ford of something.
Most of the aftermarket gas tank companies make tanks just like you need. I think they are 7" wide at the top and 12" wide at the bottom, 30" wide. The sedan guys run them behind their back seats. Dad and Bro both used them and they work great.
It might not be as early trad. as you are looking for, but this one turned out quite nice. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=543781 page 5 for the tank fab. If anything it's a hell of a nice read/build.
Not really pre-50, but this is what I'm running behind my seat in my '29 Coupe. http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/p...ategory_id=133/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd82.htm It a universal tank from TANKS Inc. Fits good and I still have enough room for storage in the rumble seat area (that I'm using as a trunk). -Jeremy
Used to get boat tanks out of Monkey Wards catalog, came in assorted sizes and shapes. Got the idea from car features in Hot Rod, etc. These tanks were quite similar to the universal tanks available now. I think a new aftermarket tank would pass as fairly traditional.
And if you are really bored, these might keep you entertained for a while. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=224772 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=268179
I made my own for my 29 roadster. 10" deep at the bottom, 7&1/2" at the top and 34" wide. Holds approx 15 gals.. The filler is through the center of the rear panel ahead of the trunk lid. The last pic is a little hard to see the filler cap between the trunk lid and the opening. I made the tank so the back is straight and the front angles from the bottom to top so the seat reclines back a little. Total cost was about $75.00, but alot of welding.
Wow, great ideas and some awesome cars too. I'll be joining the 30/31 club sometime soon, hopefully -thanks to all for responding!
