Anybody running the original, stock gas tank in their pre-55? When I bought my '52 there was a plastic, 3 gallon jug in the spare-tire well(rusted through)with the fuel line in it.
I pulled the stock tank today, and although its rusty on the outside, and puked tons of red clay from the inside, it seems to be ok.
I was planning on taking it in the morning to a radiator shop to have it checked, but wanted to see how many of you just said "fukit", and bought a new tank.

get it checked first, maybe a tin of that slosh around fuel tank sealer.
i had one that was rusty on the outside but shiny inside, worked for a year then pinholes appeared,as did a puddle of fuel.not good.
what car you got? a 52 could be a lot of things..... [IMG]

    It is a '52 Ford Customline, 2 door, flathead v8, 3-on-the-tree.
I'm gonna slosh some of that stuff in it this week and see.
The top and bottom seem kinda thin...

Try the "Moe method". Get yourself some CLR and 2 pounds of nuts and bolts. Put all that **** in the tank and shake it like your mama taught ya (always wanted to say that). Let it sit for a while then dump it out. Rinse and repeat as required. It worked for my broke......

large gravel in the tank...roll it around and flush....repeat until there is a large puddle of mud in your neighbors yard.

then toss in a little muratic acid and slosh around to get almost loose stuff free (will give a shiny inside too) rinse with alcohol and seal. (get sealer from JCW ...cheapest price) if you find some pinholes (real small ones) you might get by with some ducttape over them when you seal (will fill very small holes) anything larger than a 1/16 can be filled with a small 'gl*** patch before sealing the tank. I patched my fairlane tank like this and it has held ok for 3 years now. (got a stupid leak on the sender though) I had a couple 1/4" holes on the straps and just scuffed up the outside and laid a strip of mat down and then sealed the tank. if it leaked I would know by now (been 30K miles)

Ooooh graaaavel? That's even cheaper than bolts.

Forgot to mention...when your pour out the CLR and old gas make sure that the neighbors Poodle is out of harms way. Chemically burning tiny dogs in the hood will put you on the bad neigbor list......or so Im told. [IMG]

    Thanks for the tips, guys.
I took it to a reliable radiator guy today and he didn't think it was worth fixing...but,
I think I'll give it a try before I pay $250 for a new one.

Why not use the moll***as trick on it? The way that stuff cleans you could solder any holes without fear of blowing up, in my Opinion.

when I got my 54 chevy it had God knows what type of gas tank in it .
it leaked, was too big, hung lower then the spare tire well and looked bad.
I said **** it and looked around at new tanks, WOW! pricey.
I wanted to shave the gas door anyway so I thought about using another type of gas tank and move the filler into the trunck
I worked on a 65 mustang a while back ( installed a new 1/4 panel ) and remembered the gas tank was part of the floor, low profile, 16 GAL, and had the filler in good spot.
best of all they sell new on ebay ( where I got mine ) for about $100-125, with a new sending unit !
I filled the spare tire well, cut out the floor of my 54 and installed the gas tank just like its done in a 60's mustang.
no cleaning, lots of ground clearance and all my gas tank problems are gone.

Cleaned up the tank and found even more holes and was able to push my thumb through the top corners.
I figured by the time I patched all the bad spots and sealed it, it might still not be all that great.
Gonna place an order for a re-pop one with a new sender so I can start driving her...

Call Tanks or a distributor for them. I got one brand new with straps from them for my 35 chevy. Fit like a glove.

Denis Carpenter sells a repop tank for 52-54, but it says it cannot use stock sending unit (no idea why). http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb...~S3CH13O50X97885821035a~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000024N

I just ****ed the fuel out of mine in anticipation of dropping it to check on my sending unit, as my gauge is all over the map, probably just get it cleaned up and maybe sealed while I have it out. Denis Carpenter has a stock replacement fuel gauge with float and all for about $40 also.

I used the POR 15 gas tank restorer kit...$73.00. Did the job. Takes 6-8 hrs of rotating the tank and drying it out with a hair dryer. Many posts on it here.

I have done a few cars that are rare, and you just can't get a tank for them. What I do, even if the tank is rusted through, is have it dipped to remove all paint and rust inside and out, and weld patch all the holes bigger than a pinhole. I then take it to one of the dealers for Gas Tank Renu http://gastankrenu.com/loc-dealer.htm They coat the tank inside and out with a heat set urethane sealer. It will never leak again. Their guarantee them for life, and any dealer will fix it free if it leaks. If you can get a tank, reproduction, or used, that will be cheaper, the renu system costs about $200, plus $50 for dipping, and any repair costs. But if all else fails, that is an option.
