Well, I bit the bullet and bought a gas tank from Auto City Cl***ic for my '54 Customline. They didn't have any 54 tanks and didn't know when they would get any, so I ordered one for a '55. It got here and was almost identical to the '54 tank. The filler neck is bent a little different, but I think I can cut the neck and put it back together with a piece of rubber hose between the two pieces and it will work. They are made in Tiawan, but look to be of pretty good quality. Besides, the price was right. We'll see how it works out.
Let us know if it works,it seems the 55-56 tanks are around but not the 52-54 tanks and post some pictures if possible.
I tried ordering a tank this weekend from Auto City Cl***ics and received an email Monday stating they were backordered until May. This is also for a 52-54 tank. I took another reallly good look at my tank inside and out and figured I'd go the POR 15 Sealer route. Tanks are big money for these year cars. I think Mac's is fetching $345 at last check!
The tank in my 55 has a rather large flat spot on the top. Plenty of room to cut a window big enough to reach down to change the sock on the end of the pickup. Then I used a cork gasket and sheet metal screws on the new cover for the hole. An inner tube gasket does NOT work, use cork. I made a new filter from fine window screen doubled over and wired on.
I was able to install the Auto City Cl***ics tank into my 53 Victoria with just minor modifications to the body where the filler tube goes through. I did have to use longer fasteners at the rear to fasten the straps. I put additional rubber spacers between the top of the tank and the trunk floor. This lowered the tank a bit which provided clearance for the filler tube, but required the use a little longer fastener for the straps. The filler cap is closer to the license plate bracket, but it does not touch it.
Here is the link where Auto City Cl***ics is under His ebay seller name, price is not too shabby.http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-FORD-P...ord&vxp=mtr&hash=item35b02f223a#ht_500wt_1190
The '55 tank was $139. Not a bad price and I think I can cut the neck and piece it back together pretty easily. Looks like it will be a couple of weeks before I can get back to it, but I'll definitely take pictures. Now, posting them on a computer is a whole 'nuther animal.
On the '55 tank I bought, there is a ****** on the driver side, top front of the tank. I'm pretty sure it is for a vent, but I don't know how to vent it. My '54 had a vent in the top of the tank going back to the filler neck. Is there a hose vent that attaches to this ******? If so, where does it vent to? Any body with a '55 that can tell me what yours looks like? Thanks.
on my 55 there is just a pipe or fuel line that gose up the inside if the fender well and loops over, i put a fuel filter on top of mine so it would not get dirt in it
with normal driving i would say no. i pluged mine of first with a vented cap. but if you have a high draw of fuel like a wide open 4bbl you might create a va***e on the tank.
Keep an eye on what type cap you're using; a vented tank uses a non-vented cap and the lock tabs are at a different depth than a non-vented tank/vented cap. My '56 has a vented tank, had to get a non-vented cap, the other caps wouldn't seal properly.
