Hello this is my first time posting I hope I'm doing it correctly... I am now building a 383 with dart heads and doing some small porting and I'm gasket matching... I just bought an edelbrock intake gasket and I bolted it on the head and scribed the gasket opening is a lot larger than the intake runner about 3/8 larger... the heads are only 180cc runners... so I guess my question is should I take it out to the line (within a 1/16 ) or should I leave more

The head should match the intake, if the Intake is larger. If the intake opening is smaller, not as much of a problem.

Good advice above. The only advantage of gasket matching is to take out any blockage going into the head. If your intake has smaller runners then the heads, and the gasket does not block any air flow into the heads, don't do anything. Only trim what is needed to create a smooth path to the port, going from a small intake to a larger head port is not a big problem.

If you do cut the head or intake, be sure to taper back quit a ways to minimize the difference in port sizes.

A true port matching is fairly complicated. You need to pin the intake to the head going through the gasket. This requires bolting it all together then drilling for a small locating pins on each side. Now when you have them apart, the gasket will only fit on the pins. This lets you cut the intake and head to a precise diameter that will match both, and insure the airflow can p*** easily. If you just lay the gasket on and mark the head, how can you be sure the intake will bolt on the exact same location every time? You are worried about a 1/16" or less, I bet the intake will move forward and backwards more then that, thus making your small port work useless.

I ended up just cleaning up the runners and doing a long tapper out to about an 1/8 befor the line which is where the gasket landed on the intake which was already gasket matched to a gasket that must have been shaped like the ocean but after cleaning up that mess the head and intake should match up pretty darn well better than it did any way... thanks for all of your in put
