Gasoline Black Out Day, Wed May 19th

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by $pomadepete$, May 14, 2004.

  1. I received this in my email today from a friend, pls forward it on... (and, keep on movin' this msg to the top, bttt)

Subject: GASOLINE BLACKOUT DAY (WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 2004)

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES DID NOT
PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL
COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.
AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF
OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL
    COMPANIES.

THEREFORE MAY 19TH HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT TO THEM" DAY
AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT
    DAY.

THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY
PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT.

WAITING ON THIS ADMINISTRATION TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS
NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES
THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO?

REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT
THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES
ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS
SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING
MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY,
WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.

SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE
YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE MAY 19TH A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF
THE UNITED STATES SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

This is, of course, a great idea.
To insure this is effective, no one should pre fill the tank in preparation od the boycott, which would be counterproductive.

  4. Ya, it might be a cool idea to just make ALL Wednesdays "no gas buying" days. I normally dont belive/spread crap like this... but it seems like there is nothing else we can do. So maybe... just maybe...

  5. I'm dead broke anyway until next Thursday. I guess I'll boycott too!

Unless everybody stays home or rides their bicycle on the 19th it wouldn't make any difference. Buy our gas today or tomorrow or next week, they still get their money as long as we burn the fuel.

  8. I ALLLLLL for this!!!!!
YESSIR, I'll not put gas in my Mercedes 300D on Wednesday.
Hell, to be super supportive, I will NEVER put gasoline in my 300D EVER.

Back to looking for a life.....:)

The oil companies don't ship us gasoline, they ship us crude oil. (Most of?) The refineries are here. It might eventually effect OPEC but I'm not sure what effect it would have.

Which leads me to the next point. If OPEC feels they are over producing crude oil (whether it's due to us not needing as much because we are all boy-cotting them or whatever) they'll simply cut production which will in turn cause the price per barrel of crude to sky-rocket. So when you decide to finally fill that empty tank, you will be feeling it. It's a supply versus demand thing, and they're in control of the supply. They can increase demand by ristricting the supply. It would take one hell of a boycott to effect their bottom line. Like "No Gass September."

The oil companies are in a pretty secure place right now. But have you thought about what would happen to OUR economy if we succeeded in causing a significant dent in their cash-flow? The first people to feel it would be the local Qwiki-Marts. Then people at the big refineries would start losing their jobs. Then the surrounding towns would start to crumble. Not to mention what would be happening on the stock-market.... Talk about your "Black WhateverDays."

I'm not saying that such a result is bad. In fact it just might work but you should know what you're doing before you do it. "Winning" would require a hell of a lot more sacrafice than one day not buying gas.

OPEC is a political organization. Their weekness is in their reliance on local governments (Dictatorships) to keep their oil production going. Thay pay for protection. You can't separate the government of a rich country like Saudi Arabia, from OPEC. They are govened by OPEC as much as they are by their "elected" officials. The quickest way to light a fire under the organization is to light a fire under your elected officials. Let them know what you want and how badly you want it.

    It's a crock - read this.

As a rule, any email that says 'Forward this to as many people as you can!' should be deleted ASAP.

You might be better off boycotting certain oil companies for weeks at a time until they lowered their prices to gain customers. Then rotate to the new lower priced company and so forth. If it could be pulled off widespread enough it could work. I like the one day boycott, not sure how effective it would be.

I usually don't reply to OT posts, but thank you, 62buford, for posting that link to breakthechain.org. I love useful sites such as that and snopes.com (urban legends) to stifle my well-meaning relatives who insist on sending me alarmist and misleading emails.

This idea keeps coming up, but makes no sense. It's not like boycotting fast food places--we can get food from many places. But if you drive you need gas. The car doesn't say "in protest I'll make this tank go more miles". So like someone else said, unless you walk or ride a bike or something it won't make a difference. Nice gesture, it just won't make a difference.

You can't get 10 of your best friends (if you have that many) to do anything at the same time. Now a couple of billion INDIVIDUALS shouldn't be a problem, right?

All of these forwards about boycotting gas for one day are not going to work because we are going to have to fill up either the day before or the day after anyways!

Considering using LESS oil nationwide. Electricity uses oil!!!! Turn off any lights, TV's, etc when not in use. In fact, turn off your computer everytime you are through using it. You'll be saving on your electric bill each month as well!!!

    Here's a tip worth trying:
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL or CHEVRON and SHELL in Canada. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

  25. I hope the prices stay high enough for long enough for the U.S. to stop building shit like this.

    gas prices are on topic.

"Fuel-efficiency on America's highways has not improved significantly over the last ten years and light trucks (including SUVs), which typically get the worst mileage, comprised nearly 55 percent of all new vehicles sold in 2003, and have accounted for more than half of all sales each year since at least 2000."
