For my Widow Wagon '57 Chevy, I've got a Liberty-built slick-shift Hemi 4spd in a Direct Connection aluminum case.
I am REALLY looking forward to side-stepping the clutch on that thing and slamming gears with the V-gate shifter.

The Russo & Santo car recently got smashed in a pit accident. Some idiot put his Camaro on a trailer, didn't chock the wheels, and the trailer rolled down a hill into the car, smashing the nose, bending the axle and frame.

There was a thread over on Yellow Bullet about it.

When I was at the Meltdown Drags last year, there were a lot of original gassers that fit that description.

Cool, I have heard that one should be on everyone's calendar, if possible.

Yea, I read the whole thing, just figured this thread already had enough chaous in it.
John will get it back together, one way or another.

And this car is basically set up the way it was raced in the 60's, with some safety upgrades and a different engine.

ABSOLUTELY a fantastic event. I've covered events for car mags for 15 years, and that is by far my favorite.
It heavily inspired me to put together The Gear Jam this past weekend.

I wonder who was the first one to pull a wheel stand in a non exibition type car, and what year it was... could you imagine the crowd when it happened.

Charlie Hill ran a '39 or '40 4 dr sedan early on, and there were a few in the lower gas classes early on.

That pic of yours looks to be pretty early, what with both cars wearing steel wheels and no decals in sight aside from hastily applied class designations with tape....
That guy must have attained Legend status that day...!

If I recall correctly, pulling the wheels was against NHRA rules at one time, wasn't it?

Can't think of many men in automotive history who cut a bigger figure than Mickey T.
If that guys told me to knockoff the wheel stands I would damn sure knock off the wheel stands, and probably follow it up with a "thank you Sir"...lol

I love this delivery. I almost bought one to do this style car, but I figured it would be heavy. It's still awesome.

I was thinking earlier than that, mid fifties?? I wouldn't want to swear to it, I just seem to recall running across it somewhere. Early on, some tracks used air hoses to trigger the timers rather than photo-cells, maybe that has something to do with it?? Wonder maybe it was in King of The Dragsters? Or possibly Robert Post's book? I will try to look it up, I could be all wet here.

I love Larry Fators car, mostly because, unlike all the current "gasser" BS, its honest. It never was a gasser, and it doesnt pretend to be, it was a car that he drove on the street (with the axle) in the late sixties, that he basically restored the way he would have wanted it as a teenager in the late sixties, if he'd had the funds. Hamb "gasser" wanna-be street car guys take note, no fake spindle-mounts, no non-functional moon tank hanging from the grill, no lame-ass B/Gas lettering, a ram log instead of a tunnel ram, a drilled PU front axle instead of some speedway kit crap, and a decent street-racer type cam/rear gear. I love that car, it 100% reminds me of the solid front axle street cars I saw around here as a kid in the late sixties/early seventies. And NO ONE called them gassers, there were too many older guys around here that actually had class legal gassers that would have given anyone who said anything so stupid a clip on the ear. Its where the current "gasser" fad BS coulda/shoulda went, and where a lot of us hoped it would go, but didnt.

Not a must have by no means but the big truck axles and wide 5 wheels were neat in the early day.

When the first SWC Willys made Hot Rod it had a 3/4 ton chevy truck rear in it, with what are probably the only 6 bolt 4 hole halibrands ever made.

I've seen photos of S&S team cars running a truck rear end too.If it was available and unbreakable,it most likely got used by a racer at one point,at least til something better came along....They look crazy though, don't they...?:)

From what I have heard, the factory installed ratio in 3600 series chevy truck rears in the late forties/early fifties was either 4.88 or 5.13, that probably had something to do with thier popularity as well.

  27. That would be Dave Hales willys. He is on here also. Him and Fast Freddy of S&S fame

That would have fit the bill pretty well for a 301" stick shift car.
