That's a really good point that I don't think anyone else has touched on yet.
If we could still get Sunoco 260 at the pump we'd be laughing!:)

"No you can build a gas burning engine that runs approximately the same compression as an alky engine (12:1 +), but you have to run it on racing gas which is over $10.00/gal."

Correct, but if I were building an alky burner I surely wouldn't be building it to only 12:1+. I would be looking at 15:1 as a minimum up to 18:1 depending on my budget. Anything less and your not really getting the bang for the buck.

A body can't do that with a gas burner without expecting it to be a budget buster and expect it to live.

I'll say we would be seeing a lot less wheel standing with gas. It's not always about HP, sometimes it's about torque. And that is where alky shines in a high compression engine.

    I think. ;)

Perhaps E85 mentioned might be a good compromise.

I don't think it's as popular as VP, but Sunoco does still make a Racing/High octane gas. I wouldn't be suprised if some station some where has it at the pump--------but that's splitting hairs.

Well, this didn't take long to find.

I only brought it up because of the E85 & race gas comments.
Back in the day- Ethel was nearly 100 octane & most racers- including me- fueled up on the way to the track right from the pump.

  6. Current NHRA (500") and Aussie Pro Stock (400 Small Block chevy ford & mopar are 15.6-16.5:1, as well as some Comp. Elim. engine combos, and run on gas. Part of the recipe includes dynamic (actual running compression) which is governed by the cam profile.

I think you might want to take yourself up on that, sit back and read and learn. Some of the ideas you are so strongly suggesting just make no sense. Lots of the guys here have run down the track a few times, which in point drag racing has been around for 60 yrs. I think it's pretty well sorted out on what the fans want to see while at the track.
Like I said sit back listen and learn, you might be amazed.

If you get into the realm of 15:1 with either fuel, you are getting into the "all aftermarket" area. And that's not cheap.

And I'm sure a big part of that recipe is $$$$$.

I would just hope that at the end of the day the Gasser deals make some sort of room for the weekend worrier folks on working mans budgets. Seems like most of the current members of the groups are people with lots of disposable income or those somehow "in the business".

X2 on that! How do you think these guys are making passes today so much faster than the record passes were back in the day. These babies are bored and stroked almost to the max.

    Hey Moon,
This would be a great time for you to listen up and take Swade's advice. He's got something north of 4000 posts on this site.
Sit back, listen more, talk less about things you don't know, and learn something without disrupting the thread so much.
Your shenanigans are just a hair away from getting this thread closed down.

Actually I'm going to take both your advice. Obviously I have nothing worth while to contribute to the thread and to be honest I'm not learning a hell of a lot ether. So I'm stepping out as far as posting here further.

I'll check back occasionally to see if there has been anything worth while added that hasn't already been covered here on the amen brother thread.

Now I'm gone to burn a big old fat one. Enjoy yourselves everyone!

I find Michigan has a lot of 100 octane at the pumps.I believe it's because snowmobiling and offroading is so prevalent in Michigan.
Works to the advantage of hot Rodder's,but I sure wish more places would carry E-85.At regular gas prices, with octane above 100,it's the bargain of the century.

I tried an Edelbrock Ram Log for my big block chevy and it was awesome looking, but didn't work very well. They were available late 65 in ads in the back of Hot Rod. There's an article in Hot Rod testing a 454ci bbc stroker that ran one in the Allen Green fastback Chevy II it wasnt very impressive only one hp per cube on an all out race engine.

Another friend of mine ran one of the first tunnelrams I'd ever seen. It was one of Ralph Ridgeway's "RidgeRunner's". When he sold the 57, I bought the intake,
carbs ,cam, etc. for my 67 Camaro. Ran great at the track on the 57 ,but terrible on my daily driver. 20 years old.....what did I know.

So on an old model A C or D/gas car I was looking at one time that originally ran in Ohio,it had an Olds rear end with wheelie bars fabricated from a pair of old main leafs. Was this a fairly common setup back in the early-mid sixties?
Most of the stuff I see from the mid-sixties onward is mostly pneumatic tire stuff under the bumper,or very small coil springs and some kind of vertical mount under the bumper.I would like to use the leaf style on my coupe, but the coil style looks so slick that Im not sure yet.
Anybody got an idea if these were both used within the same time frame,or if the leaf style faded out in favor of the other...?

Here's a good example of what is referred to in the article as a "superfeatherweight machine". These guys either had nerves of steel or didn't know any better driving cars like this at the speeds they were going at the time.

That car has a lot of tricks. Like a gas tank that looked like a radiator up front and a water tank out back that had an electric pump to pump coolant. The reason is gas weighs less than water so put the heavy stuff out back. Super cool car.

That thing sure looks like it raised the bar,no doubt about that.It looks like a innocent little stock-ish Willys, but its a wolf in sheepskin clothing, for sure!

If the pics enlarge good enough to read its worth every minute of your time. Don Long was obsessed about light weight.
