My A/GS '40 Willys PU (avatar) was going to be the "Tiki Traveler". Painted aqua blue with the name lettered on the doors in bamboo like the Hawaiian dragster. The traveler part was an homage to the Chuck Finders Willys. I was planning on a Roth-like graphic on the tailgate showing a Tiki driving the truck with the bed full of trophies and cash. Life and cash flow intervened making for some hard choices.
Some favorites from over the years; Dark Horse, Austintatious, Lil Hoss, The Beatnik, Full Metal Jacket, StudePendous, Atomic Reaction ('56 Olds gasser).....

There was a '55 Chevy A/G car in the neighborhood where I grew up, straight tube axle, running a Hilborn injected late Hemi. It had an arrow straight body, black lacquer, and the quarter panels were lettered My Baby Is Black. I think the name came from a '50's B movie. It was a crowd favorite at US 30.

Quite legendary in this neck of the woods.
    Hugh Wedekind owned it.
I belonged to the Multnomah Hot Rod Council in the early seventies and this car was already in the Portland Roadster Show hall of fame (1970).

  8. Back in the 60s a friend of mine Tom Gouluboff who's father had a floor covering shop owned a 55 Nomad that he appropriately named the Carpetbagger. The car ran mostly at Dover and Lebanon Valley drag strips but was seen at many strips around New England. It started off as red and was later changed to yellow....

My old Gasser. Called "Faded Memories" faded memories.jpg , ran with the Classic Gassers. Ran a 67 Firebird called" Wildfire" in G/Gas in the 70's. Building a Morris Minor and thinking about calling it" Little Meanie ".

The term "Gasser" makes me think of a farty person who had too much beans so I think the name "Chilly Beans" would be cool.

    Hello,

Along with DND’s comment about original gassers from the 60’s on the west coast, most gassers had their owner/driver’s names on them. But, by 1964 when we filmed an All Gassers Meet, a lot of them had a bunch of sponsors names to help pay the bills. upload_2016-10-30_5-14-48.png upload_2016-10-30_5-15-53.png
Others, like the soon to be named “Silver Dollar Willys” were still nameless. Our friend, Atts Ono, put on his name on his 40 Willys with gold leaf lettering which stood out all the way across the pits. That is called great name recognition…as well as outstanding art work. upload_2016-10-30_5-16-23.png

But for the most part, there were only the names of the owners/drivers on the door from 57-60. Of course, there will be exceptions and I am sure someone will find some on the standard internet search, but for most west coast racers, it was no name, only a name in those early years.

We had an auto parts store just down the street all ready to give us major sponsorship and several friend’s businesses that were giving us outstanding costs for go fast speed parts. Those were penciled in when our primered Willys was getting ready for paint. But, that did not happen, all contracts were cancelled due to our accident.

In the 80's I ran a 68 camaro, No time, No money on the side of it. I miss the days when everyone had a name of some sort on the side of their car. Was at a cruise in yesterday and there was 2 gassers. One a Morris Minor, first one I've seen in years. The other one, 55 chev, Shake, Rattle and Roll. It was pretty nice but it had a cowl hood on it. That stood out like a sore thumb.
