So what if you go against the grain and build a bodystyle that was never factory backed, so it can't be called FX? What if you altered the wheelbase when you put the axle in so it can't be called Gasser or MP? But you didn't move the rear wheels so it's not really AWB/Match Bash? What if you built it with the intention of pushing the limits of a street car, but it's still going to be run at the track, so it's not technically a Street Freak? What if it's stripped down and doesn't meet any of the lbs per inch class breaks? What if it's got a 5 spd trans and it's getting a tunnel ram, but it's PC to 1965 otherwise? Now what do I do? Oh, and I took the bumper off too. And it's red. It's been called everything from a "nostalgia drag car" to "Built Ford Tough" Gasser Gasser Gasser Gasser Gasser Gasser Gasser Gasser Gasser
The def I gave for Match Bash I think is creditied to Magnante and I agree that is has some roots of a really kind of non existant class at some AHRA events. As for photos of axle cars with M/P on them i think many tracks used to stick cars in what weren't really the appropriate class to make a field. I'm pretty sure NHRA always said M/P was for stock suspension cars, and have seen local track photos that argue that point.
C'mon, split them hair's. Over and over, classifaction, it's this, no it's that. 'till the cow's come home.............
Thuderbolt and Lightfoot. Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges! The wacko driver of that Mopar had a bunch of rabbit's in cage's on board.
I saw it happen many times at the track where a car was stuck in a different class because there just weren't enough cars to race otherwise. So Yeah, I guess I KNOW. Can't say that is why David has seen pictures of M/P cars with axles, but I would bet it was the case, unless someone can show me a rule book otherwise.
Many Gasser's had minor wheelbase changes with an axle and although technically illegal I saw then run that way. Certainly your axle doesn't appear to be pushed very far and fits the spirit of the rules and the class. Gassers by early rules had to be street legal, in fact early rules said they had to have full exhaust. No rule against 5 speed, per say or a tunnel ram for that matter. I don't think your car, from what I can see, shouldn't be called a gasser type car.
Then it would be an Altered. The cars that didn't fit in any of the other classes alway found a home in an Altered class. Lots of gassers in the 60's would run as Altereds if the competition was too tough for them in the Gas classes. Just take the hood or nose off and they were an Altered.
Here's NHRA's Modified Production suspension rule. IHRA was even plainer. "Straight axle conversion not permitted."
Gee, maybe the one racing with the B/G on the side. Primered one definitely an Altered car. But what is A/XS?
i have a shot somewhere of a little datsun gasser truck.....called the american ric shaw.....neato ride forgot to mention...its from around 70 or 71....
Except that it's a '62 or '63, and no FX car had a solid axle until '64, and older models were not retrofitted for later FX competition.
wooooooo!!!!!! Dig that!!!!YOU GUYS WANT SOME FACTS? FREIDOG'S GOT FACTS. NO CRAP GUYS, I HAVE LEARNED SOME STUFF ON THIS THREAD. I TRY TO RESPECT EVERYONES OPINION, AND I'M ALWAYS READY, AND WILLING TO SOAK UP NEW INFO. I LOVE "GASSER" STYLE CARS, AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH EARLY TO LATE SIXTYS RACIN, AND CRUZIN. I DONT WANT THE TRADITION TO DIE, OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, BUT I JUST DONT SEE A PROBLEM WITH THE TERM GASSER WHEN USED TO DESCRIBE THAT STYLE OF CAR. I THINK THIS THREAD NEEDS MORE PICTURES, I KNOW FREIBURGER HAS SOME. WHO ELSE? I LOVE YOU ALL, AND LETS HAVE A GREAT DAY.
Seems to me, the original M/P year cutoff, or starting point, might have even been pre-war. So, in that case ,you could run a straight axle car ,if it was originally equipped that way.
Yep, in fact if the car came off the assembly line with a straight axle you HAD to run one. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe I've seen a 32 Ford MP racer. (CRS) Larry T
OK,OK. So my '57 Chevy 210 with a straight axle moved forward 3", 489cid big block,'glass front end, approx. 3200lb would be A/A or B/A? Not *A/FX because the factory had nothing to do with the build. Right? Not a gasser because of the axle and the altered wheelbase. Right? I would rather run this thread into the ground than look afool at a show. Besides, I'm enough of an asshole to correct people who want to "tell me about my car", so I really want to be correct. If you're gonna do it, why not do it right? Thanx guys, an interesting and sometimes funny thread!
I love that Toyota pickup! A buddy of mine gets a couple car mags from Japan and it was in there. I want a Datsun pickup or a 70's Skyline with the same vibes. Freiburger, school 'em man school 'em. I started reading car mags right about the time you started taking control of them all, and I'm about ready for you to come back and do it again. Except CC, they're ok.
i love gassers, just checking in to se if you guys have beat this horse to death yet. bout have my GASSER NOVA ready to run by the way
