  1. Well, there's no law that people have to care, but it baffles me when guys that SAY they are traditional reject the way cars were built then, like the guy above with the Blairs Anglia! WTF?
I hope the OP isn't scared off! He can be the REAL DEAL in Sweden!!!!

    Hello,
Back in 1958-60, there was a pick up truck at Lions that beat everyone. He had a bunch of stuff in the bed and still raced...Here is a an old 2013 thread and an except from Deuce Daddy Don and several followups. there are some from 2016 updated.

So, the g***er ranks from the early times to the present showcase any ideas that people had to create what they think is a g***er. We have all seen the Ford, Chevy sedans and coupes, but were overtaken by the Willys coupes, then the 33 Willy body coupes, then it goes on and on as to what cons***uted a g***er. So it goes to say that at the times, they were traditional. Bring on the odd truck or two...

Man, that's funny Don, that strikes a chord with me too.
When I was in jr high (1969), I was already on a clear trajectory as a gearhead and because I was new to this school I always had my radar out for anyone talking about hot rods or drag racing. There was a guy that fancied himself as quite knowledgeable about cars and was always holding court with the crowd of less hip kids that were easily bs'd.
This particular day; I overheard what I thought was Anglia but not quite Anglia, yep, he was telling these poor dweebs that his cousin was building an "Angela" for drag racing.
I probably should not have corrected the guy on such a trivial faux paux, but it really started getting deep when every other statement out of his mouth failed to hold water.
After a few questions from me that were either ignored or were answered as total bogus b.s. I finally asked him if I could visit his cousin to check the car out, this is when the "waffling" really started.
Wow, I just remembered that it was about a year later that I drug home a 48 Austin A40.
There's a story there too, but I think I've bored people with that one already.

I think this is the truck that you are talking about. I'm not sure it ran as a "G***er" per se back then

There's always someone who can pull out some left field, oddball, atypical example of just about anything to 'prove' a point. In this case an oddball pickup truck from 1956. It was oddball then and will always be oddball.

    Hello HRD,
That is the one, nicely re-finished for today...The whole truck (including work related stuff in the bed) was there quite a lot and had to be in the gas cl***. If anyone looks at the old Drag News listings of cl***es, where else would that truck be placed? certainly not in the altered cl*** or with the modified motor, definitely not in the huge stock cl***es. He usually raced that El Camino and I know that racer was in the gas cl*** with its modified motor.
    Thanks for the great photo,

I will vouch for this, both these vehicles ran in gas cl***. One BIG problem with the picture Jnaki is trying to present. BOTH of these cars predate the "jacked up straight axle" period that these *****s that are trying to "sell" this steaming pile of ****, DEFINE the word "G***ER" by!
So yes, there is historic precedent for building el caminos and full size pick-ups as g***ers. AS LONG AS YOU BUILD THEM WITH VOGUE TIRES AND STOCK RIDE HIEGHT!
So yea, you can use Lopers El Camino or Charlie the painters F100 or even Bob Schliem's truck as justification for your full size pu based "G***ER", Just so long as you skip the moon tanks, the pie-crusts, the jacked up stance, the tunnel rams, the white fenderwell headers, the mags and the faux spindle mounts.
So, how does that sound. Personally I like it. How about you build a "G***ER" F-1 with a j-2 olds, hydro, steel wheels, stock ride hieght and Vogues? Sounds pretty good to me. As a matter of fact, my '39 convert with a 4x2 olds, isky E3, side-shift cad, nose down stance, www's and '56 star fire caps is actually a more authentic "g***er" than most of the jacked up horse**** I see being flogged as "G***ERS!" On here.

The only thing worse than bolt-on spindle mounts is white wall pie crusts:confused:
Please, no cards and letters about how the whos who of early 60's drag racing ran whitewall pie crusts.
There are just some parts of history that should stay history.
How does it go, something like "let dead dogs lie".
Did someone say something about drawer knobs.

    Hey FG,
Nicely said about g***ers. I just found a screen grab from my files of both cars sitting on the start line at Lions in 1960. upload_2016-12-20_16-26-51.png
Sorry, I did not get any action shots of the Ford truck, but this was from the film clip on the El Camino.
When I posted the El Camino footage, I thought I saw a yellow truck at the line.
    Thanks,
    Jnaki

One other thing...I apologize for being the "guinea pig" that required the drag racing tech committee to ban all Moon Tanks from inside of the cab. After our explosion and resulting fire in August of 1960, the ban was given to all racers to move the Moon Tanks elsewhere, in front or rear. The fad started for front mounted tanks. (looks be damned.) DRAG NEWS story: August 13, 1960 edition "...all racers were given a two week notice to move the tanks..." They were nicely installed inside of the nose (behind the grill) in front of the radiator like Atts Ono's Willys, but gradually crept outward...
    Thanks,
    Jnaki

There you "G***ER!!!" guys, commit that screen grad to memory. Wanna build a "G***ER" pick-up? That's what they looked like.

It's surprising some clown hasn't posted pics of the Whitby ford B/FX'r or **** Boytons Dodge as "proof" that there were sixties "G***ER" pick-ups yet. Usually, that has happened by now...

I hear you HRP. But cripes, this is our collective history, for at least some of us, not some "flavour of the week" ego trip for the local cruise night. That thing Don said about some ***** telling him his anglia couldn't be a g***er because it sat too low, that just put me over the edge. And I bet I ain't the only one. That's not the OP's fault, but where the hell is this **** gonna stop?

  17. Thought I might get a response here, this car was entered by Arnold Beswick (pictured here) in C/G at the first Winternationals in Daytona, 1960!

The only time I saw the F-100 run was on a grudge match night, you know, your basic run what ya brung deal - so No cl***, just guys gettin it down the strip.
If it did run sanctioned events at Lion's then I guess AHRA rules would have put it in a gas cl*** or maybe modified production, not really 100% sure. If you notice on the film clip of the Elky, it does not have any cl*** designation anywhere that I can see so who knows

I'm about 85% sure I have seen a pic of it in the pits with a gas designation on the windshield or maybe mentioned in the photo caption as it running in gas on that particular day in NHRA regional event coverage in a late fifties hot rod. So that wouldn't be Lions. I will take a quick look for it tomorrow and see if I can find it. As far as the El Camino, I was actually thinking of Johnny Lopers which was black, so that ain't it.

As to the photos posted just above this post, that's exactly the sort of **** we are trying to straighten out here. For the usual crowd, no, those are not g***ers, those are "G***ERS!!" Honestly, There's another word that springs to mind, but I kinda like HRP, and I don't wanna piss him off. Besides, he's bigger than me.:D

May I present Priscilla for your viewing pleasure.
    Not a g***er(whatever that is).
    Ran mid 10's @125 mph.
She may be fast, but she sure is ugly.
Yes kiddies, that's an Oregonian or Oregon Journal newspaper box air scoop.

Oddly enough, in the seventies I knew a guy who street raced a '58 that looked very similar to this, minus the green windows and any cheese ball lettering of course. Had a tunnel ram 355 with ported 292 turbos, a .600 lift Crane flat tappet, super T-10 and an olds rear with 5.38's. I only ever saw it make one p*** at a sanctioned drag strip, he muffed the launch, it broke the drivers side motor mount and pulled all the alternator wires out and went 11.51@123 and change. Probably faster than the "g***er" in the photo. I don't ever remember anyone calling it a g***er, it was usually just referred to as "Sids truck". I guess any street driven small block that was bad enough to run 123 mph through the mufflers in a truck in 1976 didn't need any kind of spiffy keeno name, it could just stand on its own merits.

Funny you should mention that, George, because this thread brought back memories of a buddy's 1956 3100, with a transplanted 327/4 speed from a '66 Chevelle. It was a pretty quick truck for 1976.

    Absolutely nothing eh!
As a matter of fact they are about as traditional as anything could get.
1967, a friend of mine had an older brother bring a big ol 57 Chrysler four door back from San Diego after his gig in Nam. This thing was painted up like the U.S. flag, and plopped on top of the hood over the 392 hemi was an Oregon Statesman paper box.
I talked about this here recently but this is the same guy that told of being part of a detail responsible for dumping a pallet of new surplus GMC 671 blowers in San Diego bay.
I remember this stuff like it was yesterday.
