What is a good steering box to use on a gasser front end, and is there anything that needs to be paid attention to? I'm stubbing out the frame, and am going to use a Chevy truck leaf spring set-up that I have. I anticipate it sitting fairly high. Car is a '58 Edsel and I haven't put my eyeballs on its steering set-up as of yet. If you are running a straight axle, what box/set-up are you using and what problems did you run in to? Thanks!!!
Saginaw 525 or Saginaw 122 boxes are what we used on our 3 gassers in our club. You need to bend the pitman are down to get the tierod parrallel to the axle and we bought a couple of borgenson joints and flat sided steel shaft to hookup the steering. Vega or Corvair boxes are good but really only for smaller cars.
I recenty did a straight axle set up on a 58 Ford Fairlane.....should be smimlar if not identical......the Ford steering was cross steer and and the pitman hung down low enough to be able to run a bar over to the pass side spindle....you will probably need a fabricated arm to bolt to the spindle....I forgot what a Chevy truck spindle and backing plate look like...... check with Mercury Bill on the HAMB he owns the car now...he can give a better explanation on what you need.....it has a 56 F-100 front axle set up though...Neal
Some time when you're working on it I can come by and give it a look-see... maybe two heads can figger it out... Sam.
Radshit did you guys use the stock frame, or stub it out? Did you take any pictures of it by chance? Thanks for the help guys!
Here it is. Hope it helps. I painted the homemade steering arm blue, cause I had a can of blue paint laying there.
