we'll be making cheap crap in america soon enough, don't you worry, we just have to wait until the labor costs in the current third world begin to rise.

we should all know by now that things are not like they were.

  9. BP,
There is no brand loyalty in this brave new world. One must ask as to the origin of the part. What we must try and promote is country loyalty.

May not hurt while you are at it to drop Gates a note about the quality of the pump, or as has been done in our house in the past is send the part to the corporate offices. The wife actually shipped a foreign made couch to the corporate offices of a major furniture company in New York in the '90s. The boasted American made furniture and had a guarantee that they didn't honor as well. ;)

That's just it! If Americans brought American made, at triple the price of Chnia made, there would be no China made, but they don't, they want cheap.

Given a choice of two water pumps, one triple the price of the other, which one will most Americans buy??? Yes, we know, they'll say "oh well, if I could afford the US made one I'd buy it, but......"

  11. Yep!

One of the most popular pieces that most guys use are Scat cranks that are made in China. ~JUNK!~

But people will buy it 'cause IT'S CHEAP!

  12. Yes, made by the Annin company in PA. I get all my flags at Home Depot now.

Surprised this thread is still open. As far as buying "American"...
The Gates family sold The Gates Rubber Company to Tomkins plc of London in December of 1995. In September of 2010, Tomkins plc announced its acquisition by a Canadian consortium made up of Onex Corporation and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

A thread like this could go on forever so maybe this one has run it's course.

I merely wanted to share my experience with Gates products which I once considered to be quality stuff.

  18. Interesting info Rock, THANKS!

  19. I sell auto parts and have for 30 years, import parts are the norm these days but, BUT!, when I ask the option of rotors made in America or Asia, most want the latter and as most of you know, there is a difference. I see this in most replacement parts, the vast majority want inexpensive parts but there holdouts who want quality and are willing to pay for it. I have the option on some parts of what we stock and I keep the rebuilt water pumps as they are less money and a better unit then the Chinese import pumps as mentioned here. But, NAPA has another line of import parts called Altrom and they are closer to factory spec import parts, infact, they are like Delphi here, OEM suppliers for the most part and they look really good. Ordered a master cylinder for a Meredes and the old unit and the new had the same casting number. We see this a lot in this line. But the old American car parts? Too bad so Sad! Imported wheel cylinders for 49 Fords with metric bleeder screws, etc! One must be careful and remember the old saying of, "It only cost twice as much to go first class!"

The gp does not care that all the plastic crap they buy at Wallie World is made in China. As long as it is cheap enough. They can't afford anything good because they lost their job due to outsourcing because of the price fixing Wallie World does.

  22. Bull!

I too own a business and I can tell you with experience that nobody has money for what they "need" but they all have money for what they "want"!

The whine: Oh I can't afford that item. Do you have anything cheaper?

The following week: Hey check out my new 4 wheel drive 4 wheeler. I got a deal on it, it only cost $12,000.00
