In my last post I was talkin bout wireless Gauges via Bluetooth and such and the guys said it would be Hamb unfriendly and such,O.K. I can see where that would ring true. Then another chimed in about K.I.S.S. principal, (Keep it simple stupid) I can even see that. I'm not entirely insensitive... Soooo... How bout a gaugeless dash... You can run a water temp gauge on yer radiator cap,an oil pressure gauge at oil sender,Amp meter at Battery or alternator, you can dipstick your fuel tank, and you already have a dipstick for your oil... Tach can run off your dizzy,Odometer can run off your Hubs like a U-haul truck, I dont have a fuckin clue for a Speedometer... Ya I do.. An airspeed indicator like on a plane or a boat.. I think its called a pitot tube... But jus writin this crap, I dunno if it's any simpler.... Mikey
seems like your trying really hard to do something different. whats wrong with some nice vintage looking or vintage gauges? Nothing screams hot rod like an old set of winged curved lenses Stewart Warner's
hire a little monkey i guess to monitor your gauges while you are DRIVING. the point of gauges would be to monitor WHILE driving. i think a plain dash with no gauges would look unfinsed as well. as if it was a fiberglass repop dash that never got finished.
I have only a speedo on my dash, and it's not even connected at the tranny, oil pressure gauge is in front of cowl, fuel pressure on front of fuel rail, and a real motometer to read water temp....K.I.S.S.
Why have all these gauges where you can only refer to them while the hood is OPEN, or the car is parked??? Put them in the dash, where they belong. They ARE traditional, ya know!
I'm acctually thinking along those lines... I've got '36 gauges on the dash but some of them have had a "negative succes scenario, reliablity wise". So I have a water temp gauge on my top radiator hose. And I am going to ad 3 fuel press gauges ( one off the pump, and one off each pressure regulator. So I can see how they follow the blower boost ) And a oil press gauge, while I'm at it. They will all be in the engine bay. I'm not running a hood, they are nice and visible from the driving position ( I'll ad a little light on the firewall for night driving ), and dont clutter up my dash.
how about small 3 lights one for oil pressure one for temp one for 1/4 tank of gas,so you know its time to refuel (i dont know how to do that, but i think its possible)
Put em in the glove box to hide em or if you have a chrome cover where your radio goes, put a hinge on it and hide em there. Ive got a 61 Studebaker Lark thats bagged and I dont want to see the gauges or switched so im going to hide em behind the radio delete. My radio is goin to just be my I-pod ran to speakers and an amp.
That's gotta be a bitch to drive with the brake through the floor and the gas above the tranny tunnel.
Actually it's quite comfortable, foot up on the console puts toes right on the gas and heel just a couple inches from the brake. A very relaxed position to drive with one leg slightly cocked up on the tranny tunnel.
GPS for speedo, fuel gauge to avoid long walks, water temp and oil pressure on engine, and a dash full of non-functioning gauges for the boys on the H.A.M.B.
All my gauges are in the trunk. I keep a midget with a penlight in there too. Every 5 minute he calls me on my cell phone and gives me an update.
I guess once your engine blows and you come to a rolling stop, you can get out and check your gauges. Yup, no oil pressure....
I've got a speedo, tach, oil, volt, fuel, temp, inside the car, ( on the dash ) plus an oil pressure and water temp gauge on the firewall. I have always put gauges in my cars and always will. Makes no sense not to.
Some of you are cut off... or need to put the bong down. Being aware of your engine is half of hot rodding and doing unpractical things just to be different is lame.
The guages in my 32 pickup are on the inside of the firewall, down above the drivers left foot. They are visible, but not very convenient. It was a fad of sort in California in the 80's that, thankfully, didn't catch on everywhere. Mine are coming out soon and going up on the dash where I can see them. I want the information they provide to be as easy to access as possible, since it can mean the life or death of my engine, or at least an untimely rest break alongside the road. One tends to ignore guages you can't see, and that can really end up costing a lot.
Thinking about this I guess no gauges would work to an extent: No fuel gauge, car stops running, but boom box is still blasting No temp gauge, car is steaming, but boom box is still blasting No oil pressure gauge, car screaches to a hault, but boom box is still blasting No ammeter, battery eventually goes dead and boom box stops making noise No speedometer, car stops because it is being pulled over, but boom box still blasting No tachometer, engine is roaring, throws a rod, but boom box is still blasting. Hooray for the boom box!
