IHC v-8s use a gear drive and seem to last pretty good. Of course, their red line is about 3600-3800 IIRC.
seen that staring at me many a day , should see the gear cases the BIG EMD's use , the gears are fixed which is nice plus they are helical cut so they are quiet , some of the gears on some motors they use a torsional dampner in the gear that uses springs and some use haringbone cuts to keep them tight and thrust loads down .
Back when you and I would have stared at one of those the helical cut gears robbed some torque. They have come up with a new way to design and create helical gears that are so close to straight cut gears in the parasitic drag dept that it is almost useless to run noisy straight cut gears. I was reading about them in an engineering magazine a couple of years back. Wish it had given enough information for me to actually be able to tell you what the difference is.
the roots blower was actually designed for mine ventilation , besides scavanging on 2 stroke detroits they use them in industiral applications for vacuum and low pressure high volume applications , we have units that we unload dry bulk tankers with very efficent to unload dry sand for foundry and sugars/flours .
Yep they have been used for lots of stuff. industrial screw compressors are just the logical next step from the original roots compressor
Some of those set ups remind me of all the late model ford crap I had to work on. Some they even throwed a water pump in there, that way when the front seal started leaking it went in the oil pan instead of dripping on the ground! Glad I don't have to do that anymore.
