i am running a gear drive in my sbc, and have had no problems with it, and a friend wants to run one but is cautious because someone has told him they create a harmonic vibration that loosens rod bolts and mains, causing engine imploding. i drive the snot out of my car and have never had anyproblem, but befor i tell this guy that the info is wrong, i would like to ask this knowledgable group. i find it hard to believe that so many companies would market a loud engine destructing device.
I have run one for years. It drives everyone else crazy. I like it. The only thing it has loosened is the nerves of anyone that I pull up against. In thousands of miles of driving and many runs on the dragstrip, I have had no problems. Most people who say bad things about them have no direct experience theirself. Roll down the windows and let Mr Pete Jackson play his melody.
Actually, From what I have heard, they won't loosen bolts or anything, but they transfer the Crankshaft harmonics into the cam (and subsequently the ignition timing gets ****tered a little) and valvetrain (possibly shortening the life of valvetrain components). I say on a street engine, go for it. On an all-out race motor, I think you'd make more power with a chain (or a belt of you can afford it!!). FWIW: I HATE the noisy gear drives. Just seems like MAJOR posing to me! If you're set on running gears, go with the quiet ones!!!
I ran one on my Nova and never had any problems with it.The sound of dual Flowmasters and the gear drive was great.
