Did anybody know what gear ratio Olds use 1956 in an 88 with Rocket 324 and hydramatic?
And is there any engine number decoding site on the net for these engines?

  2. Look on the rearend - there should be a little number stamped into the p***enger side of the pumpkin.

    Thanks
    Here’s the engine number: V 1407498
I hope I read them right; it was a little difficult to see.

Btw, is the rear axle strong enough to deal with big block torque?

    I really appreciate your help.

The olds rears were a**** the stoutest rears available from any manufacturer in the 50s...

The pumpkin will be stamped with one of four numbers to identify the gear ratio. Number will be on lower p***enger side of pumpkin on a little raised boss. #6 is a 3.64 ratio. #8 is a 3.42 ratio. #9 is a 3.23 ratio. # 0 is a 3.08 ratio. I got this info out of my 1956 Olds Shop Manual.
