Jeff/21, I agree to a point, I used my example to point out the drivetrain will take it, it's the owner and his pocket book that may cry uncle. I ran much higher gears in other vehicles as well ( still have a set of 6.13's hanging on the garage, just for old times sake), but they weren't very highway friendly! That's not a bad plan. I also daily drove a '64 El Camino with a 283 (2 bbl), powerglide, and 3.55 rear. I remember it getting between 15-16 out on the highway, when that wore out I did a mild rebuild on the Camaro's 327 (mild rv/towing cam, edelbrock dual plane, 650 holley 4bbl, same trans and rear, and it got 14 after that. 2002-2008 I daily drove a '72 El Camino SS, 350, performer, edel. 600 cfm, headers, 4 speed, and 3.73's, it also got 14 mpg on my 30 mile each way comute. So that should give you a baseline as to where your headed. Probably 15-16 mpg and the calculator will give you cruise rpm. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Being its going to be more of a car show type maybe 3-5000k driven per year I can afford the fuel... But these are all good points and I again I appreciate the input.
Squirrel, That's interesting. Tire spin? What is the RPM in the traps with each ratio? You are in 4th with both aren't you? I know you have this figured out, but share with us, please.
TH400, no fourth, but I get third in the lights. I think the issue is the ****py rear suspension...less monkey business happens with the milder gear.
Must be my lucky day!!! Just met with the guy that has the rear axle and it's a LSD 3.27 disc. Problem solved.
Had a 3.25:1 9" with my 390 C6 combo in a 66 Fairlane with 215.65.14 tyres. A lot better than previous 3.9:1. Best of both worlds, power & economy as it wasn't revving as hard at 65mph on highway.
Yes, I filed all that away back when I decided to go with an Exploder in my Falcon a year ago. There's tons of good info all over the internet on narrowing, what years have what brakes, and door codes. It made the Exploder choice a no brainer for me; along with the cheap prices!
