    Gemmer Box.jpg Gemmer Splines.jpg Finishing a 31 model a pickup rat rod.

I have a Gemmer, stamped 3cc31 which I****umed was from a Ford F1. I've researched here (and around the web in general) but still have questions about the pitman. This box has 36 nicely cut splines, evenly distributed about the shaft - no funny stuff or big splines, etc, but is only approx. .95 inches in diameter. Does the arm from the 56 with the ball on the end fit it? I have seen no good pictures that show splines plus diameters.

My goal is to find a pinch bolt pitman that will fit - one that has a hole on the end for a standard rod end to mount to. Everything I've seen in the junkyard is bigger than 1" in diameter. Also - the mounting flange has been reworked a big thus the 4 bolts in the pic.

In the photo there looks to be a weld behind the splined area. If it is it looks like someone had some sort of idea that didn't really work and ended up selling the box on.

F1s are underslung, if a ford truck box, it might be F100.

I would look for another F100 box to get a good pitman shaft out of with recognisable spline pattern for a stock F100 Pitman arm.

Steering, especially something as critical and highly stressed as the pitman shaft is one area where you don't want to be deviating from stock.

NealinCA is the steering guru on here, he might be able to advise. (If I have it wrong and it isn't welded, but stock)

Thanks - I will cancel my psych appt which is where I was headed. It is definitely welded and I had not put 2 and 2 together. I like how it fits so I'll try to source a spare shaft locally. Appreciate the help!!!! I'm a newbee trying to finish up a very nicely built rolling chassis.

I just finished an F-100 box conversion. I did not like the huge pitman arm and it it interfered with the bolts also. I squared the shaft and used a Model A piman arm.
