    Hi all,
i am trying to put a year of manufacture against a steering box i pulled out of my 34 coupe in order to purchase the correct rebuild kit. The identification number cast on the box is: 3CC31 and what i want to know is what year does this steering box fall into under the following selections:
    1. 1948 - 52
    2. 1953 - 55
    3. 1956
    4. 1957 - 60
any Gemmer steering box experts out there please help!

Also can someone tell me that if their is only discolouration on the surface of both the worm and sector gears whether this would constitute a change out of these gears? i see no obvious wear marks or pitting on both the worm and sector gears but the steering box did have some free play before the tear down.

    best regards,
    Tommy

I don't know those part numbers, but I bet I could tell you the application if you showed a pic. And so will a hundred other HAMBers.

Been studying Gemmer box # and best I can tell 3cc 031 is 57 F100 while 3CC OO31 is 56 f100. I am under the impression that the main difference in 53 to 60 F100 boxes is the mounting flange bolt pattern and the length of the worm shaft. Wouldn't stake my life on these statements but I believe their accurate.

Rebuild parts should be the same 53-60, as turdytoo said, the main difference is the mounting flange. Yours has been machined off and a new one welded on, so that doesnt matter. Also looks like the sector shaft has been machined to take a Model A pitman arm. Andy just posted up a similar conversion he did for his 32 5W.

And as far as the discoloration, that is not an issue. I just wire wheel the roller and worm with a solf bristle wheel to clean them up before assembly.

56 and latter F100 pitman arm goes on with pinch bolt. 55 and early are splined.

Last year for splined was 1952, 53 up has pinch bolt.

  10. Correct, my '53 F100 was pinch style.
