I got a 95 LT1 for a good price, to put into the 65 C10 I'm building for my dad. I tore it down to check it out, and decided to put a new cloyes chain on, only to have it be as loose as the one I took off. The web says this is normal. Has anyone experienced this, or is have a set they used that doesn't install like it's got 100 k on it?

They make timing sets with a shorter length chain for blocks that have the mains bored or honed.

You might have bought the wrong gear and chain set..

Like SS327 said, if the block has been line bored, you need a special timing set to compensate for the slightly shorter distance between the cam and crank.

I purchased a Pontiac 400 that had been rebuilt and line bored during the process. Me being a non trusting type of person, I tore it all down to check everything. I found a new chain on it and it was loose. I took a measurement across the diameters of the camshaft and crankshaft snouts and did the math to figure out that I needed a .004 reduced chain. It was snug getting the new chain on, in fact it had me worried it was going to induce bearing wear on start up, but it was fine. I think new chains tend to wear in pretty quick. You’ll need to know the factory dimension for crank to camshaft center to center on your engine to make this calculation.
