I am so thankful that Quain Stott was persistent in his persuading Gene to let him get the Moonlighter back together & return the legionary pair back to the drag strip. HRP

That is great HRP! Makes me feel there is hope for the rest of us! And a fine looking race car too.

67 years old,I was 13 when I first watched Gene & the Moonlighter go down the track and I relived that same scene at Greer when I was 63.

I grew up just a few block from Gene's shop and around this area he was the man. HRP

Yes he is still getting it done and always wants to go faster. I sure do enjoy seeing Gene and the Moonlighter and always look for him at the Southeast G***er races. He has some great stories too.

In the same vein, I was watching an NHRA regionals on TV a year or two ago, and was amazed to see that Chris Karamesines (The Golden Greek) was in the top fuel finals. I first met him at Minnesota Dragways in 1961 when he lent me his torque wrench to tighten down the Offenhauser heads on my "D-Altered" 36 coupe. I was a wet behind the ears 19 year old and he was an old pro. If he's still racing this year, he will be 85 years old!

WOW! To be fortunate enough to be 84 and still fully capable of doing the things you love.........it just doesn't get any better than that. Love the shots of the Willys catching major air, Danny.

  12. Yes sir, if I make it to 84, and can do that, I'll know I've won.

Danny, you are so right. It was great to see The Moonlighter wheels up! It was nice to meet you, had a fantastic weekend. That is definitely a must show for those that like g***ers, vintage campers and bikes, and grudge racing. I'll be back! Pretty good swap meet too.

Met Chris many years back at Cordova Dragway , super nice guy to his fans, I got a signed connecting rod out of one of his fueler motors

I had already seen Tom pics, but thanks for the heads up. Would have liked to have caught up with him at the show to tell him (in person) how much I enjoy his pics. Maybe next time. Later, Carp

IMG_0693.JPG Hey Danny, we are the same age. Born in Sept. of 49 and watching Gene at the track doing his thing, gives me hope. I still have time, just don't wait too long. Found this from my trip to Shadyside.

The Greek is racing again this year. Lucas Oil is his sponsor and it has been reported Forrest Lucas has a lifetime sponsorship with him. He knows how much attention he brings with him. It was incredible to see him racing T/F 50 years ago and even more so today. I feel the same about Gene too.

Very Kool ! IF I last that long, I'll be happy if I still know my name and have some clue of what's going on. (Questionable now @ 69, LOL) Maybe I need to take up drag racing, seems that keeps him young and going on. Had some Sprint car buddy's that raced into their 60's, (I quit @44) we have some short track late model stock car guys running here, Slinger Wi. Into their 60's, a few into 70+. The men that still compete at their advanced age Amaze me, MUCH respect for them.

As I recall, Quain started restoring the car thinking it would get some light p***es on it, and Gene said no, he was (and still is) going to run it, and run it hard. Hats off to both of them, with respect.

Now that is some cool stuff right there. If the Good Lord lets me last that long then I've got 44 more years to be doing this.

84....! I have always felt that driving a drag car, especially the old g***ers, didn't get the blood pumping, something is wrong. Maybe that's why so many of these older ones live so long. He's got 14 on me, and maybe I'll have my '53 done by then....

  28. Good on him at 84 years old. Don't remember where I heard the saying originally, but it's "Youth is wasted on the young".
