When I was at Paso last year,I got the chance to meet him. I walk up to him at his booth and say "Mr Winfield,it's an honor to meet you sir"and then shake his hand. You know,in a real respectful way... His wife was standing next to him and just starts laughing! She says "You don't have to be so formal." I reply,"Well, you know,he is one of the "Greats". She replies,"Yes,I know, but if you keep that up it'll go to his head" By now all 3 of us are laughing like idiots and it took a while for me to compose myself for this picture. He is truly a "Gentleman".
Winfield is humble and has character... that makes him great in my book........ Ryan, how do I get cool free books to show up at my door ?????
Spend almost 15 years of your life creating the coolest hot rod website on the planet and a few perks might find their way to your door too.
I’m kinda proud to say iv had occasion to hang out with Mr. Windfield and can report. You couldn’t ask for a nicer down to earth guy. Without a dout one of , if not the best iv known. As you’d expect, endless cool stories. Iv yet to get up the nerve to ask him about his hair. If any of you guys can take the time or have the chance, go to one of his cl***’s he puts on. GOOD TIMES.
What can be said about Gene that hasn't already been said? All around great guy, super talent, ladies man, and a true legend in the world of hot rodding and customizing. He's been a longtime friend of the Burbank Choppers, and we are grateful for that. The 46 Olds grille in my 41 Ford is a direct nod to Gene and one of his many customizing trademarks. Great job by David Grant on putting the book together. Go out and get it, you will not be disappointed. D.
I have to agree with the general sentiment about what a great guy Gene is. I met him at the Mooneyes Yokohama '06 pre-party. Fellow HAMBer Martin and myself and our mate Shawn from Tokyo were lucky enough to get invited to the party the night before the show and there he was. I walked up and shook his hand kind of in awe. By the end of the show the next day we were just drinking beers, looking at his happy snaps of the last 60 or so years of his work and listening to his BAAD stories about the ladies. It was definitely the highlight of my trip to Japan to hang out with Gene. Pete
Great book... got mine in the mail yesterday! I have been trying to find pictures on the web on some of Gene's builds, and that hasn't allways been to easy. Attaching a couple of pics I took at a visit in his shop 2006... great guy!! if anyone is interested, the rest of the pictures can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/superfleye/sets/72157604296984314/
This one by chance? Gene's s****book from 1946 I believe it was. It was so cool of him to share it with us at B'ville.
I bought the book a couple weeks ago and could hardly put it down. I too found out so much that I had no idea about concerning Gene's past. Met him at the roadster show 3 years ago as he set up his swap space behind the one I was in. Great down to earth guy not looking for any special favor or recongnition, just a cool car guy. I highly recomend the book if you already have not bought it. I got mine just to see him get a little cash for being so open to the rest of us.
I have an old Rod & Custom from '57 I think that shows the use of '57 chevy hood ornaments (the potmetal bullet looking peices) as taillights in a shoebox. I swear this looks like the same car. None the less. Gene is awesome from the times I have gotten to talk to him and his work speaks for itself.

Anyone who ever has the opportunity to attend one of his workshops should do it! It's amazing to see the man work...and is very approachable at swap meets and shows. Not to mention he'll sign anything that stay's still long enough...
Took a two day top chopping cl*** with Gene, the guy ran circles around everyone. Best $70 I ever spent. Showed us how to fill large gaps with a mig welder using oxy-acl rod. Amazing.
