Until we see it in the "flesh" so-to-speak ..I wondered what one "burple" fade might look like. Just stirrin' the (paint) pot! Dave
Heh, heh, heh. It is a tempting canvas tho' ..don't you think? Cabong, his cohorts, Gene and of course Leland have created such a nifty custom I can't help but want to be involved; even if it is just speculating a wee bit on the finish..! Exciting stuff! Dave
I know that Gene really likes to do fades. If Gene sees ur photo, Cabong will have to keep a close eye on him in the spray booth. LOL Sent from my SPH-L710 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
Funny you mention this, as Gene Winfield specifically shows how he creates custom trim in his metal workshop...the only difference is the tools/tech used to produce the piece. Are you opposed to TIG welding and good respiratory protection, too? Sent VIA top secret BIGREDTODD Mobile HQ
this is such an amazing read, priceless. Kudos to all involved. I am really enjoying watching this long unfinished custom finally being finished.
Damn, I posted all this stuff this morning, but it seems to have gone away, so I'll try to reiterate. The last black overall was blocked, and 2 more coats applied. It's now ready for the last blocking. That will start tomorrow. Travis and Baker, over at Combined Metals are really git'n into this crawly critter, and doing a darn fine job, as is evident. I think the rear is looking sooo smooooth. That with the new Buick blinkers should really look bitch'n..... I'll post new info tomorrow, after visiting with Leland and Margene. Ohhh.....Chrome is scheduled for the 15th. If it's ready, I'll buzzz down there to check it out, and post comments....
Okay, I've posted (2) times today with pics and updates, and both times the posting has been deleted. Let's see if this stays up. Please respond if you have a clue as to what is going on. Thanks.....
I found this thread sometime this morning and it's now 3:45. My wife keeps checking to see if I'm still alive.... To Leland and Margene, it has been great getting to know you through Cabong's eyes, and just want to say that I loved the video conversations. I am so glad that your kustom is finally going to be finished. To Cabong, Nick, and Travis....You guys are not only doing a great job on the car, but a great service to Leland and to all of us here on the HAMB. Like Ryno said early on, you have renewed my interest in this site. Not since the build thread for Victoria's Secret have I enjoyed following a build so much. I'm hooked and can't wait to read the next installment, and am looking forward to seeing Leland sitting in the driver's seat. I have a feeling that once this car is done we will be seeing it featured many, many places. Thanks for helping Leland realize his dream and thank you for sharing it with all of us.
Updates? Trying to temper my excitement, and hoping all is well with the major players in this adventure.
Okay, here's the scoop........my pal Leland is adamant that he would like a straight color, with no fade, as the lowster was built prior to that style of paint. I explained this to Gene, and since it would be a single color squirt, that Travis and Cory could do it here. Gene was disappointed, but understood completely. He will still come up for a visit with Leland and Margene when it is completed. I gotta tellya, that was one of the toughest choices I have ever had to make. Gene Winfield has been an idol and inspiration to me since 1954. But, Leland is happy, and sad also, 'cause he would really like to have Gene do it, but just couldn't bring himself to agree to something he really didn't think was right for the critter. So, moving on.....following are a couple shots of the front wheel wells. After being reshaped a bit following replacement of the fender fronts, the lip seemed to be short. So this was fixed on both sides, and dry sanding is completed. Wet sand is tomorrow, as is something else that I will mention further down. I picked up the paint today, and am using Diamont, which Travis likes. Now there's nothing left but the shout'n...... The chrome is ready for pick up in Ogden, and the fellow there says it came out perfect....HOT SHIT!!!!!!! Now I'm stoked. Gotta go pick it up, and I'll mention that further down. The reason for slow posts, is that I've been Nick's left arm, since he had elbo surgery and can't lift anything. He builds and rebuilds Halibrand QC'c (he's the best, period), so he really needs the "L". Now let's explain the "further down"...... I am having surgery myself tomorrow, and will be out of commission for a few days. Now you know the rest of the story......... Talked to Leland and Margene today, and they are primed and ready for lift-off. What a classy couple.
Thanks for the update! Through this thread, you've inspired me to design my own late '50s radical custom. Now if I could just get someone to commission me as project coordinator...
I have been subscribed from the start and have been following with great interest, it's a very good thing that you are doing. Thank you.I hope the surgery is nothing too serious and everything works out for you, wishing you all the best, good luck.
Did Gene refuse to paint a solid colour or did you guys just figure it wasn't worth the trouble to have him come out if he wasn't doing a fade?
This is just my opinion, but I would have Gene shoot it still but without the fade. I mean... you have gone to such great lengths to make it period correct and everything. For Lelands sake.... let Gene put the exclamation point on this 60 year statement! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I'm glad Gene stuck to his guns and is getting the car painted the way he likes it. It is sad that it can't be done to make everyone happy, but it's more important that Gene is happy, than anyone else.
Don't you mean Leland??? It was my understanding that Gene wanted to do the fade. Leland wanted it a solid color? Stu
Here's hoping all parties involved end up healthier on the other side. I have no doubt that this project will make Leland and his wife very happy, and all of us knuckleheads who are along for the ride. Keep up the amazing work Cabong! Massive kudos to the fellas who are getting the work done.
