RIP Gene, it was a honor to meet you even if it was just to say HI in the bathroom at Barrett Jackson a few years ago.

Amazing talent and wonderful person, always willing to share and teach his incredible skills. I'm glad he was able to attend the LARS one last time this year before he passed and see a few old friends. RIP.

      • Rest in Peace Mr. Winfield . I had the privilege of meeting him in 2003. He was at the National Hot Rod Reunion set up. The next day i took my Rodders Journal with his feature and had him sign it, his eyes lit up looking at the pics of his old (first?) shop and showing his assistant that weekend . WE have definitely lost a legend

I was able to meet Gene last year at his place for the last Winfield/Watson show. Just an awesome individual! Even though his female 'handler' tried to rush him away, he stood his ground and engaged with me one on one for several minutes. Everything that's said about the man is true. He was just a good man! It was my honor to have met him. God Bless Gene in his eternal life to come.

Got to talk to Gene a few times, got his autograph and all that, but once at the Iola swap meet he started pulling moldings out of my shopping cart and asked me if I'd sell them. Didn't really want to but no way I was going to turn down an offer from him. Super nice guy. I still have the money he gave me, for whatever reason.

The guy was like 93 and didn't even have grey hair yet, that almost impressed me more. I am sad to hear he's passed, but what a heck of a good run he had.

  20. Unless someone has the obituary, I think you're premature. I see no record of him passing as of today.

  21. R.I.P. Gene,

I can remember the 1st time I saw his name was an article in Hot Rod or Car Craft Circa 1976-77 I was subscribed to both even though I had to wait another year to get my license. Fast forward to 2015 when I transported the Stewart-Warner display truck to SEMA & part of my fee was a pass for the week. I finally got to meet Gene & spend some time with him away from the chaos. I never name drop to make myself look more than I am (like others), but that was a really big deal for me & something I will ALWAYS remember!

    God Bless
    Bill

Talked to Gene every year (25 yrs) at the Syracuse Nationals, and we shared a distant relative on my Mom's side...so it IS like losing a member of the family:(
God speed Gene, and thanks for all the great memories...
