Absolutely Dave! Cole's work is fantastic, but I'd be willing to bet that even that car didn't go straight from bare metal to finish paint. There's likely several coats of prime and several iterations of blocking and wet sanding before that gorgeous metal work is mirror straight like it is now in black, maybe even some light spots of icing or glaze to get it just right. Very well said....having just attended one of Genes workshops all I can say is he is a 1st class guy !!

  4. If it was anyone else he would have been slammed even worse. We have discussed his indiscretions here in the past. Doesn't take anything away from the man, just that he has done some halfassed work at times. My old boss had a 20-30 year old video of him chopping a Merc, he beat a high down like he was driving tent stakes and commented on how the filler would take care of it. From what I have seen posted here from his workshops his work now is probably light years ahead of his metalwork in the past. But, he the KING of long fades, truly inspiring.

  7. He is an icon, he's cool, that car is cool, (that one spot had a bit of body filler), I hope I'm that energetic at 82, and this is the best hot rod and custom site on the web. :)

I would love to attend a workshop with him. I saw pics of one, and it looked fascinating. I love his fade paint jobs. I do look up to him highly! As a matter of fact am about to paint ly 53 lincoln capri with a nice red to black fade, and I am completely and totally inspired by a few of the cars I've seen him do!

it cracks me up to see some of you slammin GENE WINFIELD! thick bondo or not, you guys should be embarrassed for your shitty comments! its because of Gene, and all the guys from back in the day, that this whole custom thing exists! maybe next time, instead of makin some arrogant comment, you should just shut the fuck up and be thankful that these guys were there to lead the way.

Thick bondo or not. I've always admired the guy, looked for him at shows, shook his hand and told him I'm a huge fan. I'm sure he's not the one mudding the cars at the body shop before he lays down a beautiful paint job. I've got a shop, I've got workers. I know what it's like to have to turn and burn jobs to get em done. My hats off to you Gene! Im just learning how to do bodywork myself. Now I'm not so scared to use a lil more filler here and there when I need to. If it cracks, then hey! We fix it! But I do agree that if anyone has sumthin bad say about Gene, you should say it to his secratary so she can relay the message! He's not gonna care what anyone thinks. Hes got better things to do with his time I'm sure...

One of the things I hate about getting old is i'm not going to be around 50 years from now and read the accolades that i'm POSITIVE will be heaped on the guys who are now dissing Gene. In fact I'm now waiting for the posts (and magazine articles) that describe how they have dies made to produce the changes they make on these cars instead of hand sculpting them. that way 30-40 years from now you'll be able to have a new piece stamped to repair any damage.:(

We've got Gene coming here for a class later this Month. I'm so stoked I can hardly wait. The class is full. Should be great.

And if you're a bodyman and have never slung some heavy mud, you're full of crap.

    Gene is an ICON!

  18. It's not Bondo, it's light weight polyester filler.

Larry, the current owner of Maybellene, promised to send some photos of her when she was all finished up. Hopefully they will be posted soon.

Gene is scheduled to be in Indianapolis at the end of June at the Rockets car show. Maybe Larry will bring Maybellene over for a few shots with Gene.

  20. Great to see pics of him spraying a fade. Has anyone ever filmed him start to finish doing one? THAT would be awesome, and a legacy to pass on to the next generation of faders...

Well, whoever owns it in the midwest should bring it over to Indy. I can't wait to see her again all done.

Maybe there is a difference between a "Kustom", and somebody who wants to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get his car "coachbuilt" ? Guys like Gene should be respected just like the Japanese respect their master craftsman, not picked apart by "experts".
