  5. He was having a lot of issues with security out there recently. He was looking for someone to live out there as fulltime security not long ago. Guessing that didn't work out. Maybe it got to be more hassle than it was worth so he is getting rid of it.

Wow! It's always been on my bucket list to meet Gene. I had planned on attending the Winfield/Watson gathering for the first time this year. It happens to be on Oct 7th. Does anyone know if it's still on??

Gene had recently closed down any visits from the public because of someone breaking into his shop. Guessing that's what prompted the change in direction with his shop and life in general.

Yes, Ian Rossel is just up the road in Mojave. When I first read this thread I thought of him and wondered if he'd be interested in moving into Winfield's place?

It really pains me to read that low life tweekers are stealing stuff from Gene's place! Special place in Hell for those losers.

Glad to hear that Gene will remain active in doing appearances, etc!

I've long maintained he's the Jack Lalanne of Customizing.

Gene is making a wise choice.

At 96 he is going to be in charge of his legacy, and what is done with his estate, and collection.

This sits in stark contrast to others who left that to others, only to have it disappear from the face of the Earth.

If more people did this, instead of the alternative, this hobby would last longer.

We all wish Mr. Winfield the best of success in his new adventure.
He is amazing and an inspiration to us all.
Put attending one of Gene's Workshops on the very top of your "to do" list.

If the walls at Gene’s place could talk, I would listing. hell the walls of his shop know more about customizing cars than I will ever know. Good luck Gene with your new venture.

@texasred there will be an online auction I’ll share info when I see it if no one’s done it before then

  21. It is a shame the people do this to someone like Gene. If they like the desert so much, maybe they should be made to live as part of the desert forever.

And he is still buying stuff. I met him at Iola WI a few years back when he was a passenger on a golf cart and he and the driver stopped at my vendor space and my neighbors booth and bought a few things from both of us. Kinda cool but he was just like any other buyer and did not act any different than any other customer that day.

I was walking around Iola a couple years ago and Gene pulled some moldings out of my little shopping cart and asked me how much I paid for them and if I'd sell them (Mercury belt line trim). I didn't really want to sell them but I did just because it was Gene and it made a good story. I still have the money he paid me, I never spent it. Maybe that's dumb, I don't know.

Gene's one of my heroes. I hope I live even close to that long, and I hope I'm still building cars when I get old as well. He's a super nice guy as well. I'd love to have something from his shop, I wonder if they'll offer shipping on anything.

    Fricken quitter!

OH Wait, he is 96??? And still active? Never mind then.
He can pretty much do whatever he wants. Ridding himself of requirements he no longer needs (like managing a building) is a smart move.

I'm the quitter here, I closed up my shop at age 65.

I had the opportunity to tour his facility several years back, unfortunately Gene wasn’t there (although I’ve met him several times before) but Jimmy gave me a tour. Quite a place and a lot of stuff around. The problem showing people your stuff is most people are honest but there are those few that you can’t trust.

I've had the pleasure of watching Gene do a full fade paint job and attend one of his classes. It was amazing to see his Entergy, he had 3 young guys helping him and they couldn't keep up with him!

Mr Winfield I wish You all the best on Your new adventure. Keep inspiring Young Gearheads and panel beaters . Your are a true Gentleman and a positive influence in the car culture. I met Gene in an airport lobby once . He was flying to Salina Ks to the KKOA show. My Wife and I were flying to AK . She suggested I go say hi . I did He greeted me like an old friend and agreed to take a picture with me .

  30. I first met Gene many years ago at the meet that was in Worcester, Massassachusetts. My son Joe, ( Dual Quad 55 ) on the HAMB was speaking with Gene. Gene had to go to the rest room. Then Gene told Joe to watch Gene's spot, and where the money was if he made any sales, or needed change. I went over to see Gene when he came back, and commented about Gene just walking away and leaving Joe in charge. Gene said to me that he felt comfortable having Joe watch his stuff. Gene saying that made me a proud father.
