general paint info and questions

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by gears-n-grease, Feb 7, 2008.

  1. So how about a thread on paint types, do's and dont's ect, so we have a general reference anytime we need it?

I will post some of my questions and stuff that i may think is correct.

    1) Enamels can be used over lacquers
    2) Lacquers can not be used over enamels

    Primer's

i really dont know much about them

    epoxy
most may be used over steel, aluminum and body filler.

    Polyurethane Primer
some are for use over bare metal, body filler, plastic, wood, aluminum, or fiberglass.
    acrylic urethane

    etching primer
    Modified Vinyl Etching Primer

    urethane
most may be applied over old paint and body fillers making it ideal for block sanding. If using on bare metal or new metal, a self etching primer is recommended to be used before hand.

    acrylic lacquer
If using over large areas of steel or aluminum or any bare metal, a self etching primer is recommended.

    Paint's

    nitrocellulose lacquer
used mainly in the 50's and 60's?
single stage, provides a deep finish if done properly and requires lots of buffing to achieve this.
may not be available in all usa states, considered a "toxic" type paint to shoot?
not sure what can be shot on top of it

    synthetic enamels
    single stage
normal buffing to achieve optimum finish
When Applying a non-metallic synthetic enamel color, shoot a mist coat. After allowing it to get tacky, follow up with a full wet coat. On a metallic color, the process should be reversed: One full wet coat, followed by a mist coat once the first coat has become tacky.
Can be topcoated if it's totally dry and cured... But is suggested to take it down to metal to avoid alot of Mil's of paint.

    acrylic enamel
single stage- however if you use hardener in the AE you can clear it with a urethane clear
some acrylic enamels have excellent adhesion over virtually any original equipment (OEM) type finish with the proper preparation
most acrylic enamels should be sprayed in medium wet coats allowing each coat to dry hand slick before the next is applied
can be top coated with clear

    acrylic urethane enamel
    base coat / clear coat
most types apply in two medium wet coats over properly prepared and primed surfaces. A third coat may be fogged as necessary to set metallic pattern evenly.Allow 5-15 minutes flash time between coats.

    Clears

i really dont know much about them

You can shoot base over Urethane clear.. or AE, etc....As long as the urethane is cured ....otherwise base will wrinkle it

    acrylic urethane
Some May be used with single-stage urethane paint systems or other manufacturer’s basecoat and/or single-stage paint systems.

    Acrylic Polyurethane Clear

    Intercoat clear
designed for use as a protective clear for artwork tape outs on basecoats
    requires topcoat clear

    Additives and concentrates

    flakes, pearls, concentrates ect
i am leaving this wide open for input

    Questions

what is synthetic enamel compatable with?

what is acrylic enamel compatable with?

Enamel can be topcoated if it's totally dry and cured... however I prefer to take it down to metal.. I don't like alot of Mil's of paint.

Acrylic enamel is a single stage however if you use hardener in the AE you can clear it with a urethane clear. I did a car once with Dupont Centari AE, then cleared it with PPG Concept Clear (2021) Came out really good, altho I don't like mixing brands of paint like that.

You can shoot base over Urethane clear.. or AE, etc....

And intercoats are just that, intermediate base clears for "locking" down color bases for graphics and tape outs, dry very fast.....need to be cleared....

There's generally no problem mixing 2 diff brand brands of paint,

Some guys use PPG base with House of Kolor Clear, etc etc....

It's just a matter or preference for me to stick with one brand, I don't need any added variables when it comes to painting a customer's car..

Yes, true. But when you spend $1K on materials do you really want to chance F'ing it up? The best way is to stay true with one brand and even the same line within a brand from start to finish. I generaly will use HOK primers esclusively. However sometimes I do topcoat with PPG Deltron. I haven't had any real problems, but I have had problems mixing other brands.

    Wait, we are agreeing. :)

Yeah, I always stick with one brand, unless it's on something I'm not too worried about, then I might get creative. Nothing worse than a paint failure...
