I tried posting this in the Tech section but I wasn't allowed. The story is, I am helping my roommate with his 59 Cadillac. It's got the 390 in it. He wants to swap out the old generator for an alternator, which although that seems to be a fairly common swap, I have a few questions, mainly regarding to how to mount it. I'm a Chevy guy, so every part imaginable exists for the SBC and can be found easily. Not the case with the 390. If there are any Cadillac experts out there, were there any 390 or similar engines that came from the factory with alternators that I could get brackets from? I did find a universal alternator bracket on eBay, but I am leary of those because universal usually means universally doesn't fit anything. But, if all else fails, there is always the BFH. Anyway, just seeing if anyone had any ideas. Thanks for your time.
I've seen quite a few 390's with GM 1-wire alternators on them with no problem. Might have to fab a bracket to hold it up there. Really though, unless he's running a monster stereo or something, the standard 12V generator when rebuilt right will last a long time. Personally, I hate looking at a nice old mill and seeing the run-of-the-mill GM 1-wire alternator hanging there. Just kills it for me, but he should build what he wants and be happy with it.
