Does anyone know if you can use the back plate off a 1957 Ford generator on a 1949 generator conversion? The shaft on the '57 12volt generator uses a bearing instead of a bushing.

    Never tried it but....
The generator housings have the same diameter.
I believe as long as the armature shafts are the same diameter to fit into the bearings and as long as the brushes fit correctly against the armature and into the spring loaded rear back plate you could do it.

    Thanks.
The '57 12 volt plate fits the the '49 6 volt body. I didn't know if the back plate did anything other than hold the shaft and brushes.

That's it...12 one just has a pocket for the roller bearing instead of a pocket for bushing.

They will fit and the bearing end is most likely a rebuilders unit. Its common practice that when a generator is rebuilt and they have a scored shaft its turned down on a lathe and the bushing unit is replaced with the bearing. Later on the bearing became standard. Rebuilders still have the generator ends and parts but locating the ones that have it may prove to be a problem.

No, the roller setup is stock Ford on the 12 V...don't remember the PN to tell you if it came in 1956 or later, but mine is in a Ford box and a NOS armature has the shank to fit.
