Hey guys. I have seen alternators that look like generators for flatheads. Have you guys seen any of those already set up to bolt up to a y-block? Does the lookalike have the capacity to be attached to my yblock hardware or will I have to get one and customize it? I want an alternator but I don't want to loose the look. I got an awesome generator guy so if i took it to him do you think he could custom make an alternator that would fit in the generator casing? Don't know. Thought I would run it by you first incase something was out there.
There is one on the market.....Powergen(?)..cant remember the name exactly real expensive..over 500 bucks. do a search...there is a post or 2 on building your own.
I think the latest issue of RnC had a vendor in the back that sells flatty altenators that look like generators. You may give them a call.... Hold on, I'll look for the # for ya... Hot Rod Altenator Powermaster Powergen Fits GM, Ford and Flathead Fits Generator Bracketry 75amp output with 60amp idle one wire Polished chrome or black.... no price listed means SCARY...perpare to pucker! 800-862-7223 www.powermastermotorsports.com
i have powermaster brand Powergen in stock Hamb price is for the part #82011 black is $325 and the part # 282011 chrome is $375 this produces 75 amps at hwy speed and 60 amps at idle. this one is modeld after the 38-46 ford generator and has a bracket for the flathead motor included. it is also 1/4" larger in diametor as the stock generator.
Why not run the generator? I've run a generator in my Nomad for over 15 years and have had it go out once. A local shop rebuilt it (probably a dozen years ago).
I was going to run the Powermaster, but you can't bolt a fan on the front. My roadster is set up for a fan on the generator. Gonna ditch the lectonic ignition and use points and a generator.
Well most because I am building the car to drive it and with the exhaust I am putting in I am going to need a few more speaker and a bit more power just to hear any music. So I want to hide some speakers and a small sub out of view so I can actually hear a song traveling at 65 with the top down even if not well. The 15 amps the generator puts out will not do that and still run the car.
There is one for the Y-block as well. Part number 82101 for a black finish. The street price on this is around $369. Eric BTW Vaphead, the Shaft size on the PowerGen is the same as most of the Generator shafts. So you can use most OE pulleys in place of the pulley provided . And the Bearings are plenty beefy to support the fan. you may have to use a spacer, but iw will work in most cases.
