Generator Question

My generator light is staying on. No matter how high I rev the motor.It was doing it on the old one too.
The one I just put on is from my Dads car and it was working fine in his.
I checked the voltage on both posts to ground, and they are both reading 3 v while revving. Am I checking the voltage correctly? The battery had went dead while i was doing the body work, does that have anything to do with it?

Thanks guys. I also robbed the regulator off of my Dads ride when he switched it over to an alternator. I just went and threw it on , problem solved.

Try polerizing the regulator, you should be getting 7 to 9 volts reving the engine, make sure all of your connections are good including the battery cables.--TV

 

how do you ploarize the gen?

I need to do this maybe....

 

Cut a piece of wire about 6 inches long. Touch it between the Battery and Amrmature terminals on the regulator, for about 2 seconds (no more). It'll probably spark. Don't worry this is OK. That's it...

Alleycat, Did you do any welding, when you were doing the body work? If you had the battery connected you could have fried the regulator then...

 

Yea, I did some welding with the battery connected. I didn't even think that would be an issue, but I changed the regulator and everything is working great again. Thanks for all the help.
