Im running a temp control switch, the fan only needs to operate at red lights and maybe on extremely hot days at low speeds

Most I’ve seen is around 5-7 hp. You must have had yours on a Dyno to verify the results. Anyways 30 hp is nothing to sneeze at.

If I could figure out how to run a mechanical fan on my blown hemi I would... Trying to clear the waterpump belt and a 3 inch blower belt is hard to do....

Nah I watched the dyno test they ran on engine masters when they tested every fan. The worst robbed 30 at the flywheel. I know it's nothing drastic, but when you're trying to squeeze out all the power you can and adding lightness to gain ET, everything counts.

This is just another case of: it is better to look "cool"...than to be cool.

I like the idea integrating an old house fan with the modern fan
    kind of artsy engineering

I have been thinking of using two smaller pusher fans hidden in the grill
    but
I believe, why simply hide it where is can’t be seen
hide it right out there in plane view
I would not have fan remorse

A puller will always flow more air through the core than a pusher.
That idea with the old style chrome cover would come up good with a little shroud piece surrounding the outer edge of the fan too. Almost hidden to perfection.

I had planned to go to swap meets looking for parts
now with the idea of making my fan look like an era correct looking electric fan
I will be searching flea markets and old junk stores for parts
    sounds economical and fun

Looks to me like there is enough room for a mech fan, I have never had a car with an elect fan, all of mine run cool , my 40 has a 4 blade fan with no shroud and will idle all day at 170 degrees, all with no annoying street rod elect fan whine.....

Some observations on yours, generator looks really high. Belt looks like 54" based on the number, might need 51 or 52 to take it down. Speedway sells an Offy pulley that fits a Powergen and accepts stock early V8 fan hubs. I'm told Powergen bearings don't like heavy fans, hence why I did what I did. Mine ended up being a 16", and I had to clear the top of the radiator since it hangs over. I may yet go plastic, very light, hang it on the gennie hub I ****ged off a bent fan. I also run a crab, no worries, but you may have to tidy up the wires a bit. Last observation, no we're not married either, but I'd consider a proposal if we can get all those friggen hose clamps sorted. I'll go out on a limb and say the engine side holds a stat. Here's an ol Uncle Jocko trick, take a stainless stub the same size as that upper tube or a wee bit smaller, put it over the stat, shove the upper tube in to hold it, clamp the upper tube. Done. 2 clamps, head and tube (**** there's a double entendre if ever I heard one). Raw thoughts. Addl fan info for you and others, my searching revealed 3 hub lengths, a short, mid and long. Short is common, easy, cheap. Mid is tough, at least it was for me, and a bit more dough. The long will either be 32 Ford or early truck. Bucks up lately like anything else Deuce. Hope it helps.

  15. Wrong, I'm sorry. That vintage House shroud doesn't get a p*** just because it's Old. Not planning ahead is poor engineering on the builders part. The fix for your Gen looking strange is simply a shorter belt. The motor photo I posted with the Helmet dist and double shiv bottom pully gave 1 full inch between back side of core and front of Fan blade. Also, the Radiator is mounted in the Stock slotted holes in the crossmember. I simply PLANNED ahead! Plus, I know a few tricks an I care about what I'm doing.
That kitchen cover looks silly hanging there.

Excellent solution to mount the fan to the genny and I’m a big fan of radiator shrouds

as for the thermostats, yes it’s a bit of a mess, but for now it’s functional
when I first got the car it had no stats and ran great when oat was 80 f
but when the temp was 45-60 the coolant temp never went above 130
the nice thing is it’s always a work in progress
I like that solution as well

So far I have some very nice fixes for my fan dilemma

the H.A.M.B has been a great experience for me
I was a hot rodder in my youth but life took me in different directions with family and work
now with an empty nest, good wife and retirement I can catch up on my hot rod life style

I agree planning is critical in a good design
the nice thing is I can’t see the fan while I’m driving the car

I must admit that if I could utilize an original mechanical fan
that would be my first choice
1st priority is to keep the flatty cool
2nd priority is to make it look kool
    Thanks for the pictures

  20. Without getting too involved installing a manual fan similar to what I've done I would think moving your radiator forward just a little would be the largest part of the job past simply nutz and boltz involved in changing out parts to get there. Being your fender less I doubt it would be noticeable.

The fan spacing wasn't an issue for my car/engine, but fan placement was. With my engine deep in the frame I found the fan blades were a bit lower on the bottom diameter than the radiator core, so cooling wasn't optimum. No room to drop the radiator lower when I built the car, so instead I use both a mechanical fan on the engine, and an electric pusher behind the grille. The electric is controlled by a thermostat switch set at 185 degrees, so it rarely comes on except in hot weather, sitting at idle. It keeps my coolant temps at 185 max., even on the hottest days, and nobody sees the electric fan.

I would no way put a fan on that genalternator. Have you considered just removing the electric fan all together and doing some driving without it?

Ford made millions of cars with the fan on the generator. Why would it be a new problem? Not like these motors ever buzz over 4000 RPM. And if you adapt a light fan to an old hub as I did, I dunno. What could go wrong?

Not that I leave it idle long, but at a red light on a 90f day it will overheat fursure.

Maybe talk to Matt at Iron Trap Garage, he runs mechanical fans on all his flat heads. Very knowledgeable guy.

Here's a thought. It's period correct as well as being a NOS original Ford piece. I know they are out there because I sold this one to a fellow in Maine.[IMG][IMG]

Yes, that is correct. Myself, I don’t trust the powergen. I feel the support isn’t there. That’s just me. I will only run a 3 brush or a 37-39? 2 brush that supports a fan. Radiators are expensive these days! :)

I'm a little leery of the Powergens also. Not the best track record.
