That`s the reason why NOT to use the MSO! If you title it as a 2005 you`ll pay though the nose on property tax, I guess assuming that your state has such a thing. Just stamp some numbers on the frame, take a sheet of paper and lay over numbers, take pencil and rub numbers onto paper, take paper and bill of sale to state and request a new title for what year you`re workin on! That`s the way its done here! No inspection, no hassle!

Why stamp new numbers, when they're some already stamped on the frame?
Even if you register it as a 23, why can't you use what's there?
    Off to work.

I see what you are saying, but your state MUST have a way for that original owner to get a "replacement" title. They must allow for a senario where the original owner loses the title, the cars remains dormant for 40 years, and then they want to sell it.

Mostly I believe that involves the original owner taking a rubbing of the VIN # and signing an affidavit stating they have owned the vehicle for more than 7 years or something. The DMV processes the paperwork, runs checks to see if the car is stolen or in the system...if that all comes back clear, then....

The original owner gets the title and then sells the car to you. Its all legal.

No DMV on the planet will allow someone to walk in without proof of ownership and get a title. If the DMV would allow that, I could just take any car I want and make it mine.

I bought a title at a swap meet, made sure it was a clear title. Stamped the vin on the framerail and registered that sucker.
If you have to have it inspected, I have a State cop friend that will inspect it over the phone.

Got my title outta New York with the vin number I asked for ? Took it to the secretary of state office near me here in michigan told em ive had it for a long time restoring it and I think I also told em I payed about 3 grand for it. No sweat out in fifteen minutes with a glass car titled as a 32. Do your self a favor dont try getting cheap on the purchase price. If you want to do it quick and easy just give em a good number and pay the tax. Thats all they are looking for $$$$$$$$$$.

So now we know a hundred ways to fake a title. Try this, find a T-Bucket site on the web. Locate a couple owners in Mich. E-mail them and ask how to do it legally in Mich. There must be hundreds of them in Mich, and they didn't all fake it.

  10. Two people in this thread say they got titles out of New York. Just what did you get? New York never titled cars at all before 1973 - registration only. I've seen some of the old ones - they're a certificate of registration. If you have something that says it's a title, it's not legit. Heck when I registered my '60 it had a PA title they didn't even want to look at at the DMV.

It is stupid easy to register a car without paperwork in New York. Two DMV forms you fill out with the seller, explaining why the registration is not available. That, an etching or photo of the VIN, something to tell them what it weighs, and insurance cards is all you need. You get a non-transferrable reg while they run the VIN through the system; in my case 90 days later it came back clear. All I get is a little registration card and a window sticker - no title.

It seems like someone could find a way to make some money by creating legit paperwork for cars in NY given it's so simple. Take that to your Idaho DMV, for instance - it's perfectly legal for me to sell a car without a title, no matter what state you're in. I know some states will take a NYS reg card and give you a title based on it.

  12. Don't know if this is going to help, as this was in CA, but here goes anyway-

I got a 1926 Model T Tudor Sedan, from Oregon, with a Bill of Sale.
I called the CA Highway patrol, and said "I need a VIN verification, but the car has no VIN, and no title"
CHP said "all cars have a VIN" to which i replied
"Officer, this is a 1926 Model T Ford, and FoMoCo didn't have frame rail VINs yet- they went by the engine number"
CHP said "well, you got the engine?"
I said "Nope, didn't come with one"
So the CHP said "Gimme a few days, and I'll get back to you"
I figured that would be the end of that, but a few days later, I got a phone call from the CHP officer, and he said "I did some research, and found out that back in 1926, Ford went by the engine number, and Model T's didn't have stamped on the frame VIN numbers" (didn't I just say that less than a week ago, Officer?)
    and then
"Can you transport your car down to our CHP station?" and I said
"Well, I can load up all the parts in the back of my truck, and let you look at them"
    He said
"no, that's okay, where do you live?"
So I told him, he came out, looked at the parts & pieces, and asked me "what year did this used to be?" so I told him "1926" and he riveted a tag onto the frame rail, with a whole new CA VIN number, and filled out the paperwork as "1926 Ford, 2-door"
and I got the title in the mail a few days ago, and that is indeed, what the title says.
Now I have to figure out how to "incorporate" that section of frame rail, into a new, 2x3, rectangular steel, chassis. I had asked the Officer "now that it's titled, how about if I change the chassis?" and he said "then you have a 2005 Special Construction, and I'd like to see you put driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes, side impact protection on the body, and I'd like to see you make this thing pass 2005 CA emissions".....I don't know if he was being a dick or not, he had been real friendly and helpful up to that point...

These "transferable registrations" were the only documents used when selling a car in NY prior to 73'. I'm in IL and have used several. Tranferrable registrations are accepted/recognized in about 45 out of 50 states. CA, OH, IA, CO and MN are more difficult states.
Like someone else stated, the personal attitudes of the DMV clerks can mean alot. Some want to know about the car just cause they're curious, others just want to get the title transfer process/paperwork over with and the minority just want to be a pain in the ass.
I don't think Michigan is a difficult state. I sold a few NY regs up there this year and didn't hear of any problems.
What a shame it is that states make it so difficult to register a custom built car.

The guy we got ours from was advertising in Hemmings. I dont subscribe so I dont know if he still has ads in there, maybe someone can look for you, but it was rediculously easy to transfer in IL. and if I remember right he sold it to us for I think $45.00 the other options include inspections and lots of red tape and fees.If anybody can find the add or knows of a title for a 40-41 ford p/u I need one Thanks

When I bought my 55 Ford out here in NM it didn't come with a title, so I called the DMV and asked what to do and they gave me a number to call for a guy whos job is to do nothing but drive around and inspect VIN numbers. He came by and looked at, took my 25 bucks and gave me a signed sheet that I went to my local DMV with and walked out 5 minutes later with a title.
