I'm going to get my Dads old car from CT down to TX, but CT does not use titles. Anyone know if this will be difficult using just the last CT registration paperwork? Thanks
dont hold me to this but i THINK all you need is a bill of sale and 3 pictures of the car 1 front 1 back and 1 side
The freindly folks down at the Seguin reg/tax office said they can put me in contact with someone who will help when I need it. They have pix of re-titled cars on the office wall to prove it. Mikey
I would also take A document which im sure you can find online,,Saying that CT did'nt have titles. The more prepared you are the smoother things will go
Just remember you will need proof of your step mother being executrix of your Dad's estate, which is another few forms to fill out for Texas, in order to transfer a title, and as far as being out of state? yikes! Your best option, as already stated, is to go to a title company that do this every day. I had to transfer titles when my Dad passed away a few years ago, and once I finally had all the forms I needed, it wasn't too bad, but it wasn't an out of state vehicle. Good luck, and sorry to hear about your Dad.
Texas is usually pretty good about titling car from other states. The no-title thing *might* be an issue, but I doubt it. Just swing by the dmv and talk to the folks there. If they aren't helpful, head to the next one up the road. In my experience about 75% of the dmv folks are nice and helpful here so if you get a bad one just move on. It's been a few years, but if I recall correctly, when I registered a California car here they needed a bill of sale and proof that it passed inspection. If the car is currently non-inspectable, just register antique until it is. Hope this helps
Get the safty inspection first, then go to the local tax place to get the plates. They really know what to do.
Forgot, when you go the car saftey inspected, ask for a VI-30 for out of state car. The VI-30 is the ID document.
If your step mother's name is on the registration as well, then she should just be able to sign it over to you without having to deal with any Wills or probate court b.s. I did this IN CT a few months ago. Truck was in my parents names, my father had died, my mother just signed it over to me on a couple of different forms. I did take a car from NH to AZ years ago (no title in NH either) and it was very smooth. I just explained that there was no title, and the woman at the DMV said that the registration doubled as the title, in that case. Good luck.
As stated above, the car is (or should be) in you're mom's name now.CT DMV is a PIA and should take a minumum of two visits to get everything sorted out. Do this befor you get back to Texas. Good luck, bring some magazines, don't kill anyone even if they deserve it.
I am a lawyer here in Texas and I have done this once for a client. The DMV will know whether the state of origin requires a title or not, so bringing some sort of statement to that effect is not necessary. You will need a tax form, the last registration certificate, and a certification by a Texas Department of Public Saftey Officer affirming that the VIN matches the registration. (this last one is a requirement for registering all out of state vehicles, title or not). The rest is a matter of filling out the forms, paying the fee and waiting. Let me know if you have any other questions and I will try to help if I can. Rob
He can get the title in his name and have the DMV send the title to his step mother or mother. Then he can present the title to the DMV in his state and everything should fly.
All I know is that the previous county in which I lived had a bunch of old crabby ladies working at the DMV and I always managed to go there at the "wrong time of the month". Getting a title in my name was one of the most stressful events ever for me. I`m glad I moved, the girls here are much nicer.
