I was getting tired of looking and polishing at the aluminum wheels on my 55 sunliner so I picked up 4 steel rims and found the original bottlecaps so they will be going on this weekend, its going to look like a 50s car again and cant wait. Will post pics when its all done

  2. Yeah! 55s with steelies are cool! I used a pair of original 15s on the front of mine with a pair of 49 ford 16s on the back with fat pickup radials on it....rode so nice.

The 'bottle cap' moniker in the 'wheel trade' refers to the mid-80s BMW aluminum wheels, so which hub caps are you referring to, Jeff?
(Just a query about cross-labels, curious about the newer labels on which...)

My '56 got steel wheels around '60, San Jose 'racers' had to have that 'businesslike' appearance!
Rocky's '55 nails the look...in spades. My 'poverty caps' had a red center, FORD on both sides of inner circle.
LOVE what you guys are doing. ('49 Ford 16s are probably the rarest things on the planet. I'm a steel wheel guy and thought I had 'em all!)

Those aluminium wheels are terrible, PM me your address and I'll send you some $$$ to ship them to me, will take them off your hands, no sense cluttering up your garage with them, the steel wheels will look great, seriously though, changing wheels/tires change the "look/style" more so than any other single change a guy can do IMO w/ their ride, thinking the aluminum wheels looked great.

I wish I would have grabbed that 16 inch NOS rim that was at the swapmeet as I do like the looks of the 16s on the rear and have a stock look, the aluminum wheels will be for sale and have not been rubbed on a curb and will include the lug nuts and locks. I will try to find a pair of 16 inch rims for when the new tires wear out.

  14. I like those and fortunately they're still available as re-pops. They should look mint on your ride.

I might get a set of repop 56 small caps since they have white centers,I can repaint mine but they show their age and a new set would be nice but that will be in the future.

Steel rims are on and look much better,I wish I would have done this first and saved about a grand for other things.

Cool car. It looks like the car used in the "HIGHWAY PATROL" t.v. series from the 1950's.

I am now thinking about a warmed up Y block and a 4 speed, now if I can only trade the wheels for a running 57 to 59 292 then I would have to come up with a bellhousing, linkage and pedals since I have a 4 speed in stock.

Why bother with a 292 when you can use a 312?

The steel wheels painted the body color with the poverty caps always looks great in my opinion. Is it just me or is the door a shade different from the rest of the car?

To each his own... Aluminum does bring is a little more $$ as scrap though.

Doors have original paint and the front fenders and lower quarters have been painted, one of these days I will get it in one shade but that will be a big project since I want to redo one quarter and install the NOS front fenders which one needs a professional to repair so it will be off the road for a couple years so I need to get me another to drive first and then tear into it.

They are a little harder to find so a 292 will do but if I can run into one reasonable then I could go that way.

If I would have gotten the gray spoke torque thrusts I doubt I would have taken them off, what I had just started to not look right for the car so off they came and more appropriate wheels were installed. The older I got the more I disliked polishing them too.

It would look great with cast TQ's. For me, it needs rings with the caps.

  28. Concours Ford has them with the red center for about $140 a set, I might go with them since my interior is a red-black theme.
