Based on my experiences over the last four years with buyers the deal is not made until I get the cash..................all of it. Too many dreamers out there! I will gladly accept a down payment from them, but if someone else has the cash and pays in full then the deal is made, and I will then gladly refund the deposit. I've been burned too many times. It's too bad, but these days it seems like it is many many more than "just a few bad apples" out there.
WHAT!?? Now that just wrong,,one leaves a deposit just to show the good faith that they are coming back,,and at that point anyone else coming to look at teh car shoudl be told it's sold or that you have a deposit. If the buyer does'nt come back you then have the deposit and can sell the car to the next person
Lets look at the other side. Ive had people say Ill Buy it, Ill be by tomorrow with the money. Then you never see them and in the mean time you turn away other people that were interested. Lay some cash in my hand and tell me when youll be back with the rest and its yours, no matter what anyone else offers. Ill hold it for a reasonable amount of time, but if you cant make it when you said then you need to let me know. If you say tomorrow or next week and then I dont hear from you for a month, it probably wont be there. If you are going to look at something your thinking about buying, take some cash with you. Always leave a deposit get a receipt and be sure it specifies With intent of sale
I've gone through that a LOT selling parts on here. Guys calling "dibs, just get me a total, here is my zip code to figure shipping". So, you box it up, get him a total. He tells you hes sending out a money order. As you are waiting for the money order in the mail, you get several guys asking about the part. Finally, after being patient for the money order to come, you write and ask "did you send it?" Then nothing. No reply, no "I changed my mind", no "I needed to pay off my prostitute",,,,, NOTHING. So, you start working down the list of the guys that WERE interested, but they "went a different route". Cash talks.
i've been on both ends many times. If I want it, I pay on the spot, It only took loosing one sweet deal to teach me that. You or I would come back and finish the deal, but I deal with people everyday with my business that are "coming back tomorrow" and you never see em again, and miss out on other sales in the meantime. unless its a buddy, I don't hold anything. Sad to say, a handshake nowadays is only a good way to spread germs for some folks.
happened to me about 3 years back. My brother in law and myself went to buy a old 29 T body from this guy down in South Miami. Just a real clean T body you know, we were going to chop it and rat it out. Anyway we show up to the guys house and have the money (all in cash mind you) read to make the transaction and the guy is all like "Oh your gonna chop this thing?" He then proceeds to say the deal is off and tells us to leave. Jack Ass. Don
When I get an offer and then the guy making it goes away without paying, the offer is what it is. Words. Talk is cheap, money talks. If the offer was firm and sincere there are very few, if any, reasons to wait until the next day. I make that clear as they walk away, asking me to hold it for them. My last word is, I'll hold it so long as somebody else don't buy it.
That's jacked up! If you don't have your word and honor what do you have? Hope he enjoys that extra change in his pocket!
\Just so I am not misunderstood, if a car is sold with the agreement that first one to bring the cash wins, great, that is the deal. If the seller and tha buyer agree that the buyer will pay for, and pick up the car TOMORROW, the seller should keep his fucking word... because that is the deal. it ain't that hard. Both parties should deal in good faith, and just do what they agree to do... If a seller agrees to sell a car for "X" amount on a certain day, then the agreement shold be followed through with so long as the buyer is acting in good faith and being REASONABLE... if the buyer is being a dickhead, all bets are off...
When selling. I take there deposit. Non refundable. Then when the next person inline inquires. I tell them to call me right at the time the first guy is to pick it up. If the first is a no call and no show. Then there is no deal. I never tell anyone its sold until it has left my yard. With money in hand. The one with the full amount will be trailering it away. Have had way tooo many flakes in the past.
yes it is a learning curve, and no i dont have a trailer to haul around and i dont happen to carry around a huge pocket of cash.but what i do have is my WORD and in my book thats all your born with. and i guess judging by the response on here i cant really trust most people on here even unless i have a wad of cash and my own trailer to haul shit off in.well back to looking..
The title of this thread should say getting "schooled" over, because a good/wise lesson was learned here if you can look at it in a positive/productive manner
Since I have posted all over this thread because a person keeping their word is a real issue to me, I am going to have to post one more time lest someone thinks I am naive enough to believe that being honorable to my word will get me the same in return, I know better, but I have decided to TRY to do the right thing regardless. It seems like there are some folks who think that if I am dumb enough to take someone at their word I might DESERVE to be screwed, er... "schooled"... I am not saying that a careless attitude will be "good enough", bwcause that ain't even close to right, but I refuse to live my life as a DICKHEAD... Right is right, and we all know the difference. If a deal was struck, and the seller did not hold up his end then he DID SCREW the OP... Just the way it is... Not like it is a big deal, we ALL should expect this kind of stuff, but it is a good screwin none the less... I don't really want to make this a personal isse, but it almost SEEMS like people want to think that a mans word only means as much as the current circumstances dictate... and just how much money is involved... I am not saying I ALWAYS do the right thing, I am not that good of a person, but I do know that I SHOULD do the right thing, and when I do blow it, it really ain't right to think up (or make up) reasons why the person I fucked over "had it coming"....
Cash is king, and it is first-come, first-served. On the selling end: If you have already sold the thing, how about having the class to call the guy with the tow rig and the wad of cash, driving 450 miles to see what you've got, and telling him. Yeah, I recently had a 900 mile round trip to meet a total jerk for 30 seconds.
Around these parts "Cash is your Word". No cash in hand no deal. I just started the deal that when you show up at my place. You dont see anything till I see cash in your hand. That way I know that you are serious and not just jerkin my chain.
When I give MY word, I KEEP IT. It has ZERO to do with the OTHER person and what THEY do. If I'm selling something I lay the terms out in plain english in writing. If I take a deposit, it says that the deposit is non-refundable and gives the buyer a very specific time and date. I KEEP MY WORD TILL THAT TIME AND DATE. If the time and date goes by then I am free to move on to the next seller with a FREE CONSCIENCE BECAUSE I HAVE DONE THE RIGHT THING! All of you that blame your ethics on what other people do are just as pathetic as those you point the fingers at. You keep your word as a MAN so you can have some respect for YOURSELF. Simple as that.
"Money talks and Bullshit walks!" When I go to look at something to buy, I take the amount of green I am willing to spend, and usually and I do say usually it helps persuade the seller to make a deal, and there is no backing out of it if you have already paid for it. Otherwise like said before I have heard the famous lines of "I'll be back or I'll think about it, and they never show up. I did this with one of my race cars, and after being strung along for about a month I finally called the guy and told him he had until the next day to make the deal or it was no longer valid. I am true to my word, but I can say there are alot of greedy people trying to make a dollar out of a dime. So my advice if you go to buy something or even just look with the possibility to buy, take some cash and get a signed agreement!
I'm in that situation right now...I think it happens once a week..it blows, I need money to pay off my prostitute and here y'all are fuckin' me around. If you were going to "rat it out" I wouldn't have sold it to you either... just me.
Yes I have a trailer. But when I was trailerless I had very good friends to haul my shit around. I am a man of my word but cash talks. I do not like to tire kick or shoot the shit. My time is very valuable to me. So in this being said, when I go to look I am really looking to buy and leave with the item. Keeps the bull shit down. And no one asked you to trust us. You asked a question and we answered it. Go cry in someone else's beer.
Almost got screwed over... I sold a very nice daily driver 55 chevy pickup to a dude, nice paint, new wheels, new tires, perfect glass, ran great, etc. I told him It was killing me, but I'd take 3 for it. He had to think about it. at the time I was strapped for cash. A buddy of mine later said you better call that dude back, I bet he's thinking 3 means 3 hundred... I said no way anybody's that stupid... I called the dude back. Yep, he thought 3 meant 3 hundred.... He later told a few of my buddies at the engine shop that I was out of my freaking mind if I'd get that kind of money out of it. three hundred bucks... ...lol...
I have lost count of the number of people who say I'll be back with the cash and you never see them again. If someone shows up with the cash it's theirs
+1 I keep my word even if a better offer comes along, but I know you can't allways depend on others to do so. Like Apollo Creed tells Rocky in Rocky 3. "There is no tomorrow."
There is a Lion's Club in Anchorage. They call it the "BeBack Lions", because the majority of their members own car dealerships and they hear that all the time. This was back in the early 80s, but I'm sure they're still active. dj

Yup, just another sad part of the world we now live in. It's not the 90% of HONEST people we have to worry about, but the other dipwads that we can't trust. And ya can't take it personal either, it's just one of those lessons from the school of hard knocks. Sometimes, reality sucks.
bingo...I had a guy make a deal on a car I had for sale. Gave me a time when he would be back, and even a phone number. I told the next few people who called, it was sold. And guess what? he never showed. Called the number, and it was disconnected. So after that, if you don't leave some money, its not sold.
