Let's all get over it-for crying out loud. We've all learned the hard way-people lie and money talks. All you lost was the chance to buy a car. You still have your money-move on.

Recently I sold my OT truck to get something newer and bigger. Had my heart set on a local truck, but it took the kid who bought my truck 3 weeks to get the rest of the money to me (put down $1,000 deposit). The dealership had sold the truck I wanted the day before I finally got the cash. Sure I was pissed. But I found the same truck, only a year newer, with less miles, a better engine and the premium trim for $2,000 less one state over.
Now, the guy who sold it to me took my word that I would be there to pick it up in one week. Knowing how deals like this usually go down, money in hand and all that, I was sweating bullets waiting for Friday to roll around. I showed up that day with cash in hand and drove home my gorgeous "new" truck. He didn't have to hold onto it for me, but some people either still believe in their word or he could tell how serious I was.
Long story short, everything works out in the end. I showed up with his exact asking price and that was that.

I went to look at a 55' chevy post befor i got the Cad, i look the car over and they guy shows me all the spare parts and all the cars good and bad points, then i take out the cash and the guy tells me that its already sold, he just thought i stopped by to look at it because i liked old cars.

  4. Can you tell I've been burned on my last couple of sales being the "the man of his word" guy and trusting the "handshake"!!!

I have re-thought my future strategy................no handshakes, no verbal agreements, no deposits. First person with cash in full buys the goods.....period.

I've left my ID and a Credit card before because I didn't have any cash. Stupid, maybe...but the credit card was closed out, never to be used again. I just never took it out of my wallet. They looked at me funny and tried to hand the CC back, but i was like its fine, I'll be back with the cash. Got back 20 minutes later with cash in full.

What ever it take to make a seller confident is all it takes.

If he's offering the '46 for the same price, I would personally get it but that's just me and I've always wanted one of those.

me and my dad are working on an ot car for a daily driver. The tranny is out of it. One of his friends had a whole car that was wrecked. he originally wanted $300 and then I heard he wanted $250. I went with cash in hand ready to buy it and then he wants more. I offered $240 for it. The car is a wrecked 92 corolla that is probaly worth about $100. He was wanting anywhere from $320 to $475. After listening to him for about 5 hours I was finally tired of listening to his bullshit and watching him get drunk. He said come back in a couple days. This was a couple weeks ago. As far as I'm concerned he can keep his wrecked pos. Funny thing was his wife was watching as I made the offer and when he refused she just shook her head at him and gave him the look. Sorry for the rant

Maybe I'm a dumb ass but I still believe that your word should be your bond. I understand that you're dealing with the public here and a lot of people believe that they are shrewd. It could be that after screwing each other in the car game for so long they have decided everyone is as crooked and jaded as themselves. My point is that your word is as good as you have decided to make it. I'm sorry that the deal didn't happen for ya. Chalk it up to experience and deal with the next deal like the seller/buyer is shady. My experience has been that there are more foolish buyers than foolish sellers!
    Good Luck

  9. I just came back from buying 2 64 Galaxie 500 fastbacks,2 63 1/2 Galaxie fastbacks and a 61 Cadillac 4 door hardtop. I looked at them last week and the guy made the price and we SHOOK on it. I ALWAYS make sure I shake the hand of someone I,m dealing with. I,m hoping that their fathers instilled in them that a man,s handshake is as good as a written contract. If a man has nothing he can at least still have his word....

Exactly... I've been on both ends of the stick here. When I am selling a car to somebody, I don't take anybodies "I'lle take it" unless the cash is in my hand. WAY too many "I have to check with my (insert whoever you have to hear shit from) to see if it's OK", or "I will be back with above mentioned pain in the ass to look at it"...

If I am buying a car, if I don't have a way to remove it on the spot, I will at the least leave a minimum of a 10-20% deposit while I am there and at that time find out the earliest most convienent time to pick it up from the seller.

In all honesty, the seller probably had 10 or more other people in front of you that told him they would be back the next day. Money talks brotha...;)

There has been alot of great points made in this thread. Seems like alot of people talk about bringing a trailer and cash with them everytime they look at a car. Coming from a guy that doesn't have a car trailer handy, I would be broke everytime I looked at a car that was way worse than described. While cash talks, having a large amount on your person isn't the best of ideas.

Seems to me, if the seller is decent, leaving a cash deposit is sufficient if you really want whatever your buying. If he/she is dicey, then coming back with friends, cash and a trailer is the best bet, in that order. Carrying a large amount of cash by yourself to someone else's house, could put you in the morge.

  15. i always bring 2 bills of sale with me and a $100 to seal the deal when i go driving around yard shopin, it's a good practice.

  16. Wow... Talk about timing with this post coming back up..
Just the other day.. There was a car advertised on the H.A.M.B. for sale.. Another H.A.M.Ber calls the guy and leaves a number.. He gets a call back in the morning and a deal is made.. My buddy calls me and gives me the number to the guy with the car so I can get the money to him as soon as possible.. I call.. He has me call his wife as she handles all the finances and she "holds title".. I call her.. I offer to do a wire transfer (car in Texas.. us in Cali.) She states that she talked to her bank and they told her that that would not be advisable .. So I offer to deposit CASH into their BofA account.. She stated that she did not want to give out her account number.. This info is the same info that would be on a check from their account. I advised her of this and she replied.."We dont write checks".. ok.. lets try paypal.. that is a no go either.. please keep in mind.. this woman kept me on hold from what I was doing for over 6 hours waiting for her to call all these banks, paypal and such... 6 hours!! It was getting late so I called her back to offer to overnight a cashiers check. She said that her husband said this was getting too complicated.. Seemed pretty easy to me..It turns out that someone made an offer (his phone number was listed in the ad) for more than he agreed on with my buddy.. So we got blown off.. I wasted 6 hours. I p/m'd the guy from MY user name and he said someone was on their way to pick up the car.. Per his wife.. He wasn't even home yet and too busy to talk at work..
If he would have told me up front that he had another offer we would have either countered or I would have went about my business for the day.. I stayed on it all day because the guy that made the deal with him.. after a "verbal handshake" showed the car to his 15 year old son that he was buying it for. Needless to say.. The kid is disapointed.. What a lesson in human nature for a 15 year old..

I wasnt going to say anything about this bullshit on here until I saw this thread.. the guy that did this posted on here about how peoples word isn't good anymore.. too damn funny.

Had a similar (but different) story 3 weeks ago. I Had a car for sale, had a guy call and say he was coming to look in the morning and was bringing cash and a trailer. A second guy calls and offers to pay $500 more than any offer the first guy makes. I didn't want to get into a dutch auction and I didn't want to be greedy so I told the second guy "first guy has first dibs but if we can't agree on a price then you're next in line". The first guy, true to his word turned up the next day and bought the car, Done deal. Well out of courtesy I sent the second guy an email saying the car had been sold and thanking him for his interest.
Now as far as I was concerned this was a happy deal and I had been true to my word, even potentially missing out on a better price.
Then the abusive emails started coming back from the second guy who missed out on the car because i'd 'screwed him over' etc etc.

The abusive emails started again last week when the second guy actually bought the same car off ebay for a rediculously high price and this time I was the 'MORON' who had missed out on the cash.
Well that may be true but I can sleep at night knowing i'm true to my word and a deal is a deal.

If had a nickel for everytime someone said they would take it and didn't come back....I'd have...well atleast a 50 cents, haha. Man, you really cannot blame this guy too much. Next time, take your piggy bank and a trailer....or have your cell handy to call a tow truck. Thats the best way to make sure it all works, is to do it all right then and there.

  19. I posted an ad on here a while back and got an answer within 5 minutes of posting. Sent the pictures and he wants it. Said he'd send me a money order on Monday. Hear from him Wednesday and he says he's sending it Thursday. Meanwhile two other people emailed about the same vehicle. I need to get the damned thing moved ASAP and I asked if he could overnight the money order or at least send it Priority so I'd have it like Monday this coming week - no answer.

I figure if I hear from guy #1 and he still hasn't sent the money, he gets one more shot to send it, then the next guy gets pictures and if he wants it and can send the money on time, he gets it. If he passes, I go to the third guy. I hate to be jerked around for two weeks on a cheap POS. But I also hate to blow the first guy off if he's legit - it's too damned hard to sell things these days.

Just to update this, I call the guy at three different phone numbers and every one of them is disconnected.

I bring voodoo dolls with me just in case this happens. It's funny to watch them writhe in pain as I drive away.

cash talks - bullshit walks. i always leave some kind of deposit. But siometimes it's just out of our control. My wife has tought me that What is ment to happen happens. Iif its not ment to happen we can;t make it happen and most often when we force it to be. it'll go to shit in the end. All we can do is give it a shot
I found a truck once 2.5 hours from my house. Had money in hand. Set the deal on the phone . It was agreed that I was on the way with the money. Hopped in the car with the wife , drove the 2.5 hours and the guy won't answer the door, so i keep beatin on it. The roomate finally comes to the door and says he sold the truck 45 minutes ago . He won't be back untill later tonite.grrrhhh Now for the 2.5 hour drive home. Stopped at a little place and had some pie and ice cream.
"Best damn pie I ever had"

  23. we didnt try to leave a deposit.. we tried to pay the man as agreed.. we were on top of our end.. we got stroked.. MY only point with my little rant on this thread was.. If you are going another route.. strap on your balls and tell me.. dont waste my time.. 6 hours of my day went to this b/s... having your woman lie for hours was kind of gutless.. but damn it.. she was a good liar.. i wonder how often she tells her man that she is faithful.. she had to learn it somewhere.. ( that was my first and last cheap shot on the H.A.M.B. ever) ya'll have a good day..

Money talks and bullshit walks. His word is meaningless-if it's a verbal contract it's not worth squat. You need to come to an agreement and give him some money down when he agrees to sell it to you. you get a receipt saying the $$ is a deposit on a ___ and you will pay the balance of ___ when you pick up the car. He signs it, you sign it. If he sells it from under you, you take his ass to small claims court and you'll get your money-it's a binding legal contract. Forget sombody's word, it's worthless.

If you haven't had this happen to you at least a couple of times your a car dealing virgin. Welcome to the real world. Best advice: GET OVER IT AND GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE........................................or get on the internet and let a few dozen people hold your hand.
Your fathers or grandfathers generation was the last ones to have any integrity. If you happen to run into anyone that has any today, shake their hand and thank them. I guarentee you you'll never form any callouses on your hand by thanking too many people.

It happend to me this weekend a guy on craigslist was going to do some tradeing on a 31 truck. I was to go and look at it and he kept putting me off. He bought another car andnow just wants to sell his truck after a week of this shit. The bad thing is i could have traded mine for another truck but didn't because this guy wanted to do some tradeing. It pisses me off but thats life

Man I can understand needing more money in these times, but if I told someone the car was theirs, then by God I would sell it to THEM. Your word is all you have when it comes down to it.
