Hay I have a 51 Chevy still running the original 6 volt system, anyone know of a way to run radio in it with out changing to 12volts or how to get some tunes in there. I kind of wanted to keep it the same as along as I can thanks Johnny
i've seen 6 to 12 volt step up converters advertised , maybe a google search would come up with something. maybe JC whitney? most i have seen are for low amperage draw , probably enough to power a radio
Another option I've heard of people doing is to install a small 12 volt lawn tractor battery in the trunk. You can just run the radio off of that battery and leave everything else alone in the car. When the 12V battery is run down hook it up to the charger for a while. Or when I had the 6V system in my truck I read somewhere that any portable radio designed to run off some specific battery setup (I think it was 4 AA batteries- but you should maybe check first) is a 6 volt radio. I found an old household portable radio in the basement and took out the batteries. Then I ran jumper wires to from the car's battery to the two 'tangs' the radio batteries connected to. It worked great. Jay
IM not sure on this but I think you can find an MP3 player and plug a speaker in or something like that. You still have to bring your own batteries but its cheap. I have seen thsoe MP3 players that have a home console and one for the car. No ide awho make sthem or what it costs but seems like you could rig up something. My 49 is a 6V and IM going to do something like that. I like the lawn tractor battery idea to.

its EASY to convert to 12V............you can use the existing wiring because IT'S ALREADY HEAVIER gauge than necessary for 12V...you need to switch over to 12V bulbs (headlights, dash, taillights, etc),,,,,swap out the generator for a 12V alternator (or 12V generator),,,,,you need something called a runtz resisitor to install with you blower motor,,will work without it,,but will spin faster and thus burn out faster, i believe,,,and of course a 12V battery....(i may have forgotten a few things,,,i did mine a long time ago,,,im sure some hambers can fill in any blanks)....but,,,it's actually easy to do and worth the effort in my opinion...............
hey, a easy way is to run two 6 volt batteries, each battery will be parelled together[+ to + and - to -]this way both of them are still being charged.Parell battery ones - post with battery twos + post[one 10 gauge wire should be good for a 100watt radio and some 6x9s]isolate the radio power + and - directly two the batteries.Hook the + of the radio to battery ones + and the negative of the radio to battery twos -,remember if you add anything to the system like ipod peices that need power, amps,or even a power antena, keep all power and ground to the new power source[battery ones + and battery twos -]your car should also beifit from this also, more cranking power, good luck oh ya fuse your + side of everything
