Smoot has a nice sound to it, ancient or modern.

  2. Well, I have this really old Ancient Smoot-Stick, handed down from one traveling monk to the next -- along with the secret to using it. Ah, great stories of ancient smoot measurements which are also handed down. Every time a traveling monk passes through, he is required to hand down yet another tale of the Ancient Smoot-Stick. Yes, it's true: I've been handed my ASS many times.

    Nice find Jerry!

I have always wanted to restore a pre-1918 Touring car with the family to take on tours and enjoy. I really lucked out last year finding this complete 1916 Hupmobile Model N touring for a deal that was far too good to pass up.

I wish I could fallow your rule....but I have another project ahead of this one that deserves to get done first....my '65 Falcon. I have owned it for 12 years....and I need to finish it first.

About the upside-down pictures, didn't I tell you to get rid of that old vacuum-tube based Seagrave PC, which was probably manufactured in 1932, last week? How does that thing even get on the Internet? Smoke signals?! Telegraph? ;)

The vacuum tube PC is my pride and joy. In fact I just finished repacking the interocetor. As you can see by this entry it's working fine'

The water crisis at the mother in laws turned out to be nothing but false panic so I got to the shop about 12. I thought the weather was rather nice. The tail light installation went smoothly. I still have to wiring things up and install the license plate bracket. three points if you know what movie had the interocetor in it. No cheating!

    Maybe yes, maybe no.

  9. was the plate truely visible in that year or was it just attached some where for proof of lic.?

  10. From what I've gathered, you can run any plate you want on the front in Georgia, but the rear plate needs to be GA.

    License plates

I always thought you could run any Georgia plate on the rear but you have to register it with the state and you have to carry the "official" plate in the car with you. If I could find a cheap 1923 GA tag I'd put it on the speedster but GA plates are oh so expensive. That's, so I've been told, because there were so few cars in GA in the early days, the plate are very rare. A 1910 MA tag costs under $100 but a 1910 GA plate is probably around 2K. I saw a 1923 GA on ebay for $100. That's not too bad, but still too rich for me when the I need to buy other things. And speaking of other things. The reason I've been gone is I've been working on two other things. One is moving out the gas company's propane tank (500gallon) at my house and moving in my own tank (250gallon). This allows me to shop around for my propane. For you Yankees, we heat with propane down here in Appalachia and believe me I wish we didn't. The other thing is my car hauler. The water in the crankcase was just rainwater so it's okay but the carb is real bad and I think I'll just buy another. $99 on ebay unless one of you guys has a good 2bbl laying around for a '73 318 Dodge. I did work on the speedster a little today. I bolted down the taillights and ran the wire. So tomorrow before the big game I'll solder everything together and that part will be done!

I am not a Yankee but I can see Yankees on a clear day if I look south over Lake Ontario.

Propane is out of control here as well - My tanks were filled at the house & shop this week --- $2,560.10 I am lucky they were not empty!

Propane at $1.08 / litre works out to over $4.00 / US gallon. What is the price in Ga.?

Before the rise it was $2.30 a gallon. When I called around Friday the price was $2.99, $3.69, and $4.29. I ordered the $2.99. I'm worried it won't go back down. Remember gasoline. You know how they like to keep prices up once they go up. I'm thinking of getting a coal stove.

Here is a statement by Governor Scott Walker of Wi. I have no connection with Wi. but seem to be on the Governor's mailing list. It looks like there is some federal assistance available that might be worth looking into. It also gives some reasons for the "shortage".
"I love a great Wisconsin winter, and the boost winter enthusiasts, like skiers and snowmobilers, give to our tourism industry, but this year’s bitter cold spells are taking their toll. There is a propane shortage in the Midwest, and people who depend on it to heat their homes are at risk. The shortage is due to a variety of factors – days of extreme cold, a wet fall that caused farmers to use more propane to dry corn, and the shutdown of a pipeline. My focus is on what we can do about it.
This week, I requested the immediate release of the remaining Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2014 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) allocations. Yesterday, the federal government released the funds. These funds will be available to assist people affected by the current propane shortage.
On Monday, following a meeting with members of the propane industry, I announced the state will help the many small businesses that deliver propane get lines of credit, so none of the propane is sitting at suppliers when it needs to be getting to homes. In the fall, I lifted limits so truck drivers could drive longer to bring in propane. Since then, I've lifted weight limits for trucks. Last weekend, I declared an emergency so we could make moves more quickly.
Residents that need emergency heating assistance can contact:

    • Their county or tribal office – please see the map of Where to Apply at homeenergyplus.wi.gov.
    • Wisconsin’s Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) toll-free at 866-HEATWIS (432-8947)"

Screw the propane racketeers! Today I work in the shop until kickoff. The first hour I clean up. It's a mess. Then work, work work. This week's goal: Move the speedster 1/2 mile down the road to a vacant unit of mine and spray clear coat on the wood.
When I get back home I'll have to figure out who to root for--usually the team that's playing the worst. I need some new dip. Yak dip. Squirrel dip. We've got plenty of hot dogs and chili left over from my wife's birthday party.
And when I get some money I'm putting in a lake water heat pump. I'll use the propane for back up! Yeah!

    You forgot sheep dip.

How about yak-squirrel meatloaf? Combining different meats is always a plus for meatloaf. Cover with tinfoil and bake in your EZ-Bake Giant Speedster oven!

Grind up the hot dogs into the chili with a bit of cheese added for the dip and Garlic Yak roast with Squirrel pesto sauce for the main course.

    Crack!

That's a bad sound when you're tightening up a glass taillight lens. I got the lenses switched. The right and left are slightly different. I thought I had them marked but I got the wrong one in the wrong housing. A piece cracked out of the base. I JB welded it back in place and I think it'll be okay. The lights all work now. I also bled and adjusted the brakes. I glued on the hood corners I made the other day and cut and glued some new ones. The exhaust hold downs are next. We can't have the exhaust pipe jumping around. I might need to wrap the exhaust pipes too. Wednesday is moving day unless it's raining. The Superbowl is a little disappointing--sorry Denver fans.

    Muck it!

I got the repaired taillight lens back together and installed so the speedster has rear lights now. After that I dropped the tank on my car hauler. I don't have any water at my shop--or bathroom either--so I went over to see Bart at Roadspeed Garage http://roadspeed.blogspot.com/ and borrowed about 30 gallons to fill up the gas tank. Bart does lots of cool things over at his place. Check him out. I must have fixed about a hundred gas tanks so I've developed a method. Now this is only for really bad tanks. You drain the tank. If you like you can put a heater under it to warm it up and drive out all the gas left in the deposits or you can just fill it up with water which I do anyway. With the tank full of water cut a nice sized hole in the top so you can get your hand in there and grind out all the rust and scum and deposits. Then weld the piece back in. I like to smear a little JB on the seams just in case. When all is done slosh some metal prep around inside and dump it out. I gave up on all sealers when the alcohol ruined three tanks I sealed. You can usually hide the hole somewhere where no one can see it. The car hauler tank was as nasty as any I've seen. I got most of the big stuff out before I had to pick up kids.

Some day when you are bored and run out of other things to do, consider adding strain reliefs to the wires coming out of the terminal block. The soldered terminals stiffen the ends of the wore and eventually vibration will cause a break. With a strain relief the wires won;t be able to vibrate enough to cause a problem.

Suggest something snazzy for the taillight board. A brass inlay perhaps? It is unlike you to leave something plain (that's a compliment!).

Now that's the way we say it down here in the South. Cut me off a piece of that red wore.

Strain reliefs? Never heard tell of such a thing. Post a picture. I was thinking the tailboard was a little plain. The license plate will help. How about a brass luggage rack hanging down below the tailboard? Open to suggestions.

You know those cool little wooden wire clampy thangs you made? Put one or two as close to the terminal block as you can so that the freestanding length of wire coming out of the soldered terminals can't vibrate. The terminal is rigid, the soldered joint is rigid, the wire is flexible, and right there is whorr it will break. Clamping it will prevent that.

On the tail board, the best I was thinking of was inlaid brass pinstriping. Constantine's used to sell wooden/metal inlay supplies; not sure if they are still in business. A brass luggage rack would be very cool.
